The Washington DC Pen Show is less that two months away. This is one of the biggest pen shows around. I’m going this year, and bringing several of my handmade fountain pens. I might even have a knife or two. And my friend and fellow penmaker Jason Olson Write Turnz will also be there. Our tables are side by side in the main ballroom. Jason always has a nice selection of handmade pens. Many other good people will be there. Of note, there is Abdiel Acosta Abdiel Acosta Art with a collaboration pen that we’ve made, and Jon Tello Jon Tello who says he will have some pens with his engraving. I expect it will be a nice show!

When I started this pen many months ago it was to be for myself. I built it around a customized nib in an architect grind I had Mark Bacas make for me. Well, I wound up with so many orders to fill I really couldn’t justify the time to make something for myself, but I did do things a little at a time. A month ago I showed it in a nearly finished state, and it was picked up. I delivered it a week ago. The body is German red and black hard rubber, and the trim is copper, textured and given a patina. I lengthened the cap so that when closed both cap and barrel were the same length. I hand ground both the barrel and cap in my Trinity style. The body has a hand satin finish, which has become my preferred finish for hard rubber and ebonite. Mark Bacas

I just finished the last two Maxwell pens that represent his million book copies sold. The red and white is Today Matters and the blue and gold is The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork. The bodies of the pens are Alumilite, custom match to the book covers by Tim Crowe . The fittings are stainless steel with stainless damascus clips. Nibs are of course 14k gold. Ray cover engraved these as he did with the original pens, creating the monogram on the cap tops and the nibs, and incorporating Maxwell’s signature around the cap band. Working with the Maxwell organization has been a pleasure! .cover

This is a fountain pen I just finished. It was made in a similar design to a rollerball pen I made 15-20 years ago. The RB was for a lady, and she wanted a fountain pen for her husband. The body of the pen is a modern acrylic acetate and the trim is sterling silver. I’ve installed a Bock 14k gold nib. Late this summer I should be able to take pictures with both pens.

A couple of pens I’m working on. I started the dragon pen a year and a half ago. Just recently made the clip. It’s stainless damascus and bronze, and represents a dragon slayer’s broken lance. The dragon is titanium. I haven’t decided yet how I want to finish it. This one has an 18k nib. The second pen is a Trinity, and the cap and barrel are of equal lengths. The double bands are made from copper, as is the clip. I’ll finish the clip soon. It has a JOWO steel nib that Mark Bacas custom ground into a medium architect. I had planned on this being a pen for myself, but I’d consider letting it go.

The upper dagger was made around 1994-95…440c blade, old elephant ivory handle, and blued steel fittings. The lower dagger was made in 2023…damascus blade, bronze in two alloys, and titanium. Ray cover inlaid gold in the blued fittings. On the newer dagger he went all out with sculpted scrollwork and line cut engraving with gold inlay. I’ve thought for years that some of out best work was when we collaborated on knives and pens. .cover

Throwback Thursday. This is “Wanderer”, the winner of the Best Art Knife at The Blade Show in 2017. The blade is long at 14”, and was made from Delbert Ealy Damascus steel. The fittings were carved in wax and cast in bronze. The handle is fossil walrus ivory. And of course the sheath was made by Nita Broadwell.
