PIPs! The lil 25g balls of worsted 4-ply 100% British Wool - use two colors or more for colorwork, marling, scrappy projects and more!
〰️
Pips come in 3 varieties: Pip Colourwork is our dyed Pip range, Pip Naturals is our undyed range, and Tweedle Pip is the tweed version (think colorful neps added or differently colored strands twisted together)!
〰️
This fibre dyed yarn comes in a selection of beautiful shades, with many that feature subtle hints of additional colour. Made with 100% British wool, each wool fleece is carefully graded by hand and comes from sheep that are cared for by British farmers that adhere to strict ethical standards.
〰️
One of our favorite projects in Pips is Brooklime, a colorwork hat knit in Pip Colourwork colors Endeavor (navy blue), Hockney (magenta purple), and Pip Naturals in White Rose (soft white). The hat is topped with Pip Colourwork in Brass Band (brassy brown) for the contrast pom pom!

We visited the Dragón Cooperative in the very small town (pop. ~400) of Placido Rosas in northern Uruguay - this is a perfect example of the work of Manos, where the artisans can work locally without having to commute to a larger town 🧶
〰️
We so enjoyed our time with Dragón artisans - a weaver showed us how she constructed ruanas (traditional Uruguayan ponchos) on the loom and the dyers demonstrated their approach to dyeing. Ana and Cinthia, the two dyers, were kind enough to help us all dye our own skein - we each have a uniquely colored skein of Sami to remember our time at the Dragón Cooperative!
〰️

Visiting the cooperative at Fraile Mu**to was beyond amazing: the artisans warmly welcomed us and shared their crafts customs of spinning and dyeing
〰️
All of the are dyed by hand. You can see the level of commitment and work that goes into every skein, from dyeing to drying outside in the fresh air. Thank you to the artisans of Manos for inviting us into the cooperative to witness their creativity!

We visited Tops Fray Marcos, a big highlight of our Uruguay Trip 2025 - the factory is 1.5 hours north of Montevideo and processes millions of kilos of Uruguayan wool a year, from greasy wool to a smooth, cleaned, durable top (roving) 🐑
〰️
We had an incredible tour of the factory + warehouse, learning the story of the wool: receiving bales from all over the country, cleaning, combing, and baling the finished tops. We loved watching the chute where they open and release greasy wool to start its journey through the factory!
〰️
We walked away with a deep appreciation of wool cleaning and processing, as well as Tops Fray Marcos’ commitment to sustainability. So many byproducts of the process - lanolin, wool noils, wastewater, etc. - find a new life by repurposed into other products: skin creams, felted hats, fertilizer pellets for farming. They even had a windmill on site that generated more than enough electricity for the whole factory!
〰️
What a joy to see this part of the wool production process, as we deeply appreciate the end product as well: yarn! 🧶
〰️

Our Uruguay Trip 2025 is not complete without a trip to the store while in Montevideo! 🧶
〰️
We got to oooh and aaah over the gorgeous yarns + textiles created at the Manos cooperatives // soon we will be visiting the cooperatives to see these made in real time! ✨
〰️
We had loads of fun seeing so many goodies and getting all the yarn-y inspiration 🧶
〰️

23/10/2025

We’ve landed in Montevideo for Day 1 of our 2025 Uruguay Trip! 🇺🇾🧶
〰️
We have 25 knitters joining the Fairmount Fibers team + for our trip around Uruguay, visiting cooperatives to learn more about the story of Manos yarns and meeting the people who make it all happen 👋
〰️
Follow along here and in our stories as we travel Uruguay to dive deeper and celebrate its culture, heritage, and, of course, everything Manos del Uruguay! 🧶
