This is a lapel pin that I created for the PlatAfrica 2025 competition. The theme was ‘New Horizons’, so I chose to celebrate the delicate balance between beauty and preservation.
The piece is inspired by the little known Bearded Disa (Disa Barbata) or “Ouman met sy baard”, a critically endangered orchid found in one small location in Malmesbury, Cape Town.

Its fragile existence mirrors the urgent call for sustainability in our natural world.

This is an updated design by Tiffany’s of Jean Schlumberger’s ‘Bird on a Rock’, originally designed for them in 1965.
