The first time I chose my colour palette it was based on aesthetics and also because Iām just a girl who loves pink so it became a default colour for me and my creative identity. Now, Iāve since evaluated the story I want to tell and so I went with colours I saw and see every time when Iām at my paternal home.
Isibomvu- Red clay soil. This basically the entire uMkhamango, we built on this soil, we planted and it fed us. It was the one thing that people used to identify that actually we come from the rural areas especially when it rained.
Umlilo- Fire. We heavily relied on fire to cook and boil bathing water and we in fact still do.
Umqombothi- Traditional b**r. This is only made on important occasions, celebrations, rituals and ceremonies
I remember growing up we foraged clay near the river where we got water, I remember when it would rain and the soil would get all sludgy and slippery. This left traces everywhere then people would know that youāre not from the burbs or township and I recall how I embarrassed I used to be especially at school. People instantly knew I was from a rural area and we get called backwards, Amabhinca and other alienating terms but now??? I wanna tell everyone about how and where I grew up. I foraged clay, hiked the steepest hill to get to the tuck shop, swam in rivers, I had the brightest moon rises, I had the most vibrant and alive Springs with all kinds of butterflies and bugs. I loved it and often look back with so much longing.
If you look closely there is a picture of my dad there milking a cow as a young boy and another one with his fancy cardigan as a young man. The same land fed and raised him and Iām really glad I bloomed on the same land.
