Prostitution has become the basis of so-called entertainment to the extent that we have allowed the influence of Western profanity—especially in dress—to define the beauty of our own African daughters. It is a shame that older women now accept such blasphemous, borrowed culture as a way of modernizing our environment. I know views differ on the impact of Western influence disrupting our roots and beliefs, but what we call “civilization” is often used to excuse our children’s unscrupulous behavior. In fact, we tend to forget that we have a future ahead of us, and that future depends on the basic cultural development of our identity, represented by young people and the roles they must play to preserve who we are, where we came from, and what we want to become.
We can never be truly sovereign Africans if we sacrifice our identity for class and status—and whose status are we trying to prove? We are unique because of our natural diversity; that is what makes our existence firm and lasting. Imagine a world with one species, one language, one race, one culture: how monotonous and extinct we would have become. There would be no tourism, no museums to showcase differences in art and craft, no reason to travel because everyone would share the same lifestyle.
We must recognize that whatever we fight for cannot succeed without understanding and appreciating our own history and value as a nation. Britons are noticed instantly by their aura and presentation, as are the Chinese and Americans—they know who they are and what they represent. The more we lose touch with ourselves, the less power we have; power comes from authenticity, not pretense, and from full awareness and acceptance of our own flaws and strengths.
We are more than just a fashion stage for designers and investors outside our sphere of influence. Why don’t they borrow our culture and taste of living the way we do? Why do they not showcase themselves in our clothing designs on TV or in the film industry? They always make sure to cast African actors for those roles. Why?
