Everyone said a $400 pocket watch on a lanyard couldn’t be that serious. The resale market disagreed in about 6 hours.
The Royal Pop watch is sold for 600% above retail, let’s talk about it.
This is the third time Swatch has done this. MoonSwatch with Omega in 2022. Blancpain x Swatch in 2023. And now the most significant of the three, because unlike Omega and Blancpain, AP is not part of the Swatch Group. This is a genuine cross-brand collaboration between two independent Swiss houses.
What the market is telling us:
1- Scarcity is the product. The watch isn’t just a watch; it’s a cultural event. Manufacturing at accessible price points creates a buzz that luxury pricing never could.
2- This is a long game for AP. 100% of AP’s proceeds from this collaboration fund watchmaking education and preservation of horological savoir-faire. They’re buying the next generation of collectors, not the ones who already own Royal Oaks.
3- Demand doesn’t come out of nowhere, and that tells you where watch culture is going.
Now the question is, would you buy, hold, or skip?
