Thank you Sam’s Veblenian Obsession for this striking capture of the 2021 Anniversary TOKI ‘朱鷺’.

The radial sunburst dial shifts across a spectrum of metallic coral, from crimson through vermillion, with purple emerging under certain light. Hajime Asaoka drew the color from the Japanese crested ibis, a bird long regarded as a symbol of happiness and good fortune. The shade changed with the thickness of every layer applied, and only after countless samples did he settle on the gloss and hue he was after.

“In my stance as a designer, there is not a single compromise.” — Hajime Asaoka

Hajime Asaoka came to watchmaking entirely through self-study. Trained as a product designer, he became increasingly dissatisfied with the gap between his original vision and the final products produced by external manufacturers. This led him to begin making watches himself to better understand how ideas could be translated faithfully into reality. Through this process, he discovered that with the right specifications, careful communication, and uncompromising attention to detail, it was possible to achieve exactly what he envisioned. That uncompromising pursuit of design integrity remains the foundation of Kurono Tokyo today.

Thank you for this wonderful capture and story.

“During the Chinese New Year, I set out to find orchids, typically choosing the usual colors—white, purple, or a mix of both. This year, however, I wanted something different and stumbled upon rare blooms showcasing deep burgundy and vibrant orange shades! I was wearing the Chronograph MK2 at the time, and my decision was made in an instant.”

The Chronograph 1 Mk.2’s rose gold main dial draws from ‘kakishibu-iro’ (柿渋色), a traditional Japanese hue derived from fermented persimmon juice and formulated by Hajime Asaoka himself. Set against black subdials, the curved cylinder dial and 1930s-inspired Mk.2 case give the 38mm chronograph a visibly thinner profile on the wrist.

The beauty of the 2024 Anniversary Reiwa, captured through the lens of .in.time

“The inherent color of the water and its interaction with volcanic materials in the lake cast a rare and unparalleled pigment I had never seen before. During my visit at dusk, the shadows of the tree trunks on the far bank formed a breathtaking contrast to the reflections of the lake’s natural green hues.” ~ Hajime Asaoka

Inspired by the beauty of ‘Ruri-Numa’ (瑠璃沼), Hajime Asaoka sought to capture that moment in time onto a dial thus, designing the 2024 Anniversary Reiwa. All Kurono watches are paired with a standard strap, as Hajime Asaoka prefers to keep the strap understated, allowing collectors to make the watch their own through a strap that reflects their personal style.

Order Window 2 will be significantly longer. We apologize for the short Order Window 1 - there was an unprecedented surge of orders.

1. Malachite is significantly hard to manufacture and we did not plan for this surge in orders.
2. We have decided to reallocate manufacturing capacity and allocate more to Malachite. It will not be as much as we want, but it will help increase the time for Order Window 2 somewhat. However, this means that future product launches will be slightly delayed, or have lesser available quantity. There is a firm manufacturing limit of the number of watches we can produce annually without sacrificing quality.
3. Order delivery continues to start from July. However some orders will see fulfilment stretched to October.
4. We are committed to our Anniversary initiative to put as many Kurono watches onto the wrists of our fans and collectors as possible.
5. Due to the brittleness of Malachite, any servicing can ONLY be done by us in-house. We will not replace dials if they have been mishandled by third-party watch servicing outfits.
6. We will put on hold launching any new precious stone dial variant for some time.

We again apologize for the inconveniences caused at Order Window 1. We seek your understanding that manufacturing Malachite simply isn’t easy, and we will try our very best to create not just an outstanding watch, but an outstanding purchase experience as well.
See you at Window 2 at 11pm JST!
