Yes, this is a tanzanite from Kenya. From a very small find near Voi come these untreated deep blue stones, from which this one is the largest with 4.16 ct. Does have some characteristic needles but Look at the color 😎. If you are into rarities this one is on top of the list.

Tourmaline is a large group of minerals and can be found in many crystal shapes and colors. Here we have a couple of specimens from Congo, Namibia and Afghanistan.

Another sparkling grossular garnet from Mali. Don’t forget to check the website www.csgemstones.com for this one and many other garnets I recently cut.

There are currently some AI videos around which show gemcutting completely wrong, therefore I decided to make a video sequence showing the real process:
First the rough (in our case a trichroic zoisite aka tanzanite) is inspected and all impurities isolated, a preform is manually cut. After having the clean preform a proper design is made, in my case using software, and the stone mounted on a dop stick. At this point the faceting machine comes into play, which allows adjusting the angles and rotational symmetry when cutting the pavilion. After positioning all facets, the gemstone must be polished, for highest quality I use 100.000 grit diamond, corresponding to a surface roughness of below 0.25 microns. Now the gemstone is transferred onto another dop so that we can cut the crown and table, and finally polish this side as well.
The result: a 8.90 ct green zoisite, a gem as rare as a unicorn

Look at the saturation of this Tanzanian spessartine. The rough was only 2.6 ct and the finished gem is 1.18 ct - not a bad yield at all ;-) It does have a small inclusion but not visible with the naked eye. Available with many others on the csgemstones website.

Finished the first two garnets from the last post: a lemon green Mali garnet and an orange spessartine. The colors are perfect for hot summer days, don’t you agree?

Started working on a batch of garnets: spessartines from Tanzania, grossulars from Mali. Stay tuned to see the results …

Another one of the Kenyan tanzanites. The saturation is insane, look at the color of this 0.56 ct gem. More information can be found in the recent article in the Journal of Gemmology.

Finally finished this demanding gemstone. Had to redo the plans several times but at the end, a loupe clean untreated 40.44 ct tanzanite saw the sunlight for the first time. Gemstones of this kind are a real rarity and could be the crown jewel for many collections….

Gem cutting is not always only joy and fun as this unheated tanzanite shows. After preforming a small fracture showed up which I had to remove. Then, out of nothing a huge crack almost parallel to the table 🤯. Can it be rescued? Stay tuned - new plan is cutting crown first.
