Red dust one week. Salt air the next. 🏜️🌊

Two of the harshest things you can throw at a trailer, on the same trip across South Australia. Fine dust that gets into every thread, then salt that goes to work on anything that is not properly finished.

That is the point of testing out here. Red dirt or blue water, which one is your trip?

Highway pressures on a corrugated road do not make you tougher. They just shake everything loose faster. 🔧

Dropping a few PSI on the dirt lets the tyre soak up what the suspension, the drawbar and every fitting on the trailer would otherwise cop. Air back up before you hit the bitumen, and check your tyre maker's guide for the numbers.

Do you air down the trailer too, or just the car?

A jockey wheel does nothing for 99% of the trip. 🛞

Then you unhitch on a sloping, rocky campsite at dusk with the trailer fully loaded, and it is the only thing holding the drawbar off the ground.

And when the track gets sketchy and the trailer needs recovering, it is there to help you get it moving again.

The long weekend is here, and for plenty of trailers it is the first proper run since winter. Before you pull out of the driveway, give it two minutes: jockey wheel up and locked, chains crossed, lights tested, everything in the back tied down.
