A National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV) registered Jewellery Valuer ( N0559), Gemmologist, coloured stone and Diamond grader, with over twenty-three years of continuous valuing experience locally and in Sydney. Carma has seen some of the finest pieces master craftsmen have made. Carma started working at 14 in her grandfather's shop, W.E.Burchell PTY LTD (Est: 1922)
providing the framework

of knowledge and experience needed to become proficient with ascertaining the quality and identification of various styles and techniques in the jewellery industry. Inherited knowledge has been blended with current qualifications as the Jewellery industry has developed, creating a unique blend of past and present knowledge bases from which to draw upon. Carma's Grandfather was a Jeweller and clockmaker; Carma's father has over seventy-four years of experience with watches, clocks and jewellery. Carma's brother Hamish is a master jeweler and hand engraver, and her mother, Norma, has over fifty years of working experience with a passion for pearl threading and was successful managing W.E. Burchell, the family retail jewellery business.

In normal light, this looks like any ordinary natural diamond.

Unlike many of the laboratory-grown diamonds currently in the marketplace, this was a lower colour and clarity, so it did not ring instant alarm bells about its man-made origin...But under shortwave (SW) UV, the strong greenish fluorescence revealed a clue… one that even diamond screeners can sometimes miss.

A closer look — under magnification — revealed an inscription hidden beneath a claw: "LAB GROWN"

This is a CVD laboratory-grown diamond, and it’s a perfect example of why jewellery valuers certified by the NCJV are required to complete annual CPD (Continuing Professional Development).

Staying up to date with gemmological advancements, new technology, and industry standards isn’t optional — it’s essential. Identifying subtle features like this takes training, experience, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Can a valuer be sued for negligence?
Absolutely. A common myth among hobbyist valuers is “it’s just an opinion, so I can’t get in trouble if I’m wrong.” Reality check: courts don’t agree.
Recently a jewellery valuer was sued by their client —and lost—because their report lacked key details like stone weights, dimensions, quality, age, and even a photo. The judge called the report “inadequate” and had no hesitation in finding negligence. Worse, the valuer didn’t even keep their notes.
Lesson? If you’re offering valuations without proper training, documentation, or standards, you’re putting yourself (and your clients) at serious risk.
The good news? Qualified, professional valuers don’t just offer an “opinion”—they provide expertise built on years of education and practice. Investing in professional valuation protects everyone involved.
