In 1813, Governor Macquarie’s solution to a coin shortage in colonial New South Wales was... to put a convicted forger to work. 🫆

William Henshall had the metalworking skills for the job: punching the centres out of 40,000 Spanish silver dollars to make two coins from each.

The outer ring became the holey dollar, worth five shillings. The centre became the dump (great name, we know), worth fifteen pence.

From counterfeiting coins to making official currency. Quite the career change!

One of Australia’s rarest decimal coins issued for circulation...

Have you ever found a 1966 'wavy baseline' 20c? 〰️

The key area is the baseline of the number 2 on the reverse. On the variety, the lower line has a distinct wave rather than the usual clean, straight finish.

It is subtle, but once you've seen a few 20c coins it becomes easier to spot!

The next time you're holding a 1966 20c, take an extra look. 🔍 We've seen some sell for well over $1,000... 💰

Fake or fact: the 2018 $50 typo note is a rare find for collectors.❓

The typo is real. In tiny microprint near Edith Cowan’s portrait, some 2018 Australian $50 notes found a new way to spell '𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘵𝘺'.

However, around 46 million of these notes had already entered circulation before the error became widely known. They were not withdrawn, and they remain legal tender.

So yes, it is a fun detail to spot.

Rare jackpot? Not quite. 😔

The 2000 $1 mule is one of Australia’s best-known modern coin errors. 🦘

It happened when a 10 cent obverse die was paired with the $1 reverse, leaving the portrait side looking noticeably different.

What to look for:
🔍 A clear double rim on the Queen’s side

Just remember, not every double rim is a mule. The date, denomination and obverse all matter.

So - have you checked your $1 coins lately? 🧐 Depending on condition, genuine examples can sell from the hundreds into the thousands!
