A Little Sentiment, a Little Sparkle & a Beautiful View!

There's something extra special about creating a piece of jewellery that tells a story, especially when the materials themselves are part of that story! 💍✨

Recently, a lovely client came to us with a sentimental tanzanite and a ring design she'd fallen in love with. She knew exactly what she wanted her beautiful stone to become, and we were excited to help bring her vision to life!

But the best part? When we told her we could potentially use her own old gold to create the ring, she was absolutely over the moon! 🌙

As it turns out, she had quite the little collection of forgotten treasures tucked away. A few lonely earrings that had lost their partners (we've all been there! 😂), some broken chains, and other bits of gold that were no longer getting their moment in the spotlight.

Rather than leaving those pieces sitting in a jewellery box, we're giving them the opportunity to become part of something beautiful again.

We love projects like these because they're about so much more than creating a gorgeous ring. They're about taking memories, sentiment and pieces of the past and bringing them together into something new that can be treasured for years to come. 💜

From Grimy to Gleaming - What a Difference a Good Clean Makes! ✨

Now THAT'S what we call a glow-up! 😍

These silver chains recently made their way into our workshop looking a little worse for wear. Once bright and beautiful, they'd become so dark they were almost black!

But underneath all that built-up grime? Some seriously beautiful silver just waiting to shine again!

After a thorough clean and professional polish, these chains went from dull and dark to sparkling like new! ✨

Your Jewellery Deserves a Little TLC!

We wear our favourite jewellery everywhere. To work, out to dinner, running errands, and sometimes even to bed!

💍 MYTH BUSTED: You Can Only Resize a Ring Once!

Whoever started this rumour clearly wasn't a jeweller! 😉

Have you ever stopped wearing a favourite ring because it no longer fits? Maybe it's a little too snug, or perhaps it's decided it would rather spin around your finger than stay put.

Well, here's some good news: a ring doesn't necessarily have a one-resize limit!

That's right! Many rings can be resized multiple times throughout their lifetime. After all, our fingers change over the years, and there's no reason your favourite jewellery shouldn't be able to change with you.

But there's a little catch...

Not every ring can be resized endlessly. A few things come into play:

💍 The metal: Different precious metals respond differently to resizing.

💎 The design: Intricate patterns, gemstones and eternity bands can make resizing a little trickier.

🔨 Previous alterations: A ring that's already been resized several times may need some extra attention.

❤️ The condition: The overall strength and condition of the ring help determine whether another resize is possible.

The good news? An experienced jeweller can assess your ring and let you know what's possible.

So, before you retire that beautiful ring to the bottom of your jewellery box, bring it in for a chat!

Although, looking at this photo, we can understand why you might be questioning us! 😂

As you all know, we absolutely LOVE giving your old gold a new lease on life. Whether it's jewellery that's been broken for yonks, pieces that haven't seen daylight in decades, or those bits and bobs sitting forgotten at the bottom of your jewellery box, we love turning yesterday's treasures into something you'll fall in love with all over again. 💛

And sometimes, that process comes with a little extra pizzazz! ✨

When melting down old gold, we occasionally add a little sprinkle of special minerals to help the melting process along and achieve a beautiful, smooth result.

Well, this particular addition has a bit of a flair for the dramatic! 🎆

As it works its magic, it sends a shower of sparks into the air, making for a pretty spectacular photo and a slightly less spectacular clean-up afterwards. 😂

But hey, a little mess is worth it when it means transforming jewellery that's been collecting dust into something beautiful, meaningful and ready to be worn again.

Who knew recycling your old gold could come with its very own fireworks display? ✨

📖 The Jewellers Vault Jewellery Dictionary

There are a LOT of words in the jewellery world that sound like they belong in a very fancy game of Scrabble.

So, we thought we'd introduce you to a few of them. 😏

BAIL
noun | bayl
The little loop that attaches a pendant to its chain.
Basically, the tiny jewellery hero doing the very important job of making sure your pendant doesn't make a run for it.

MILGRAIN
noun | mil-grain
Those teeny-tiny beads of metal used to decorate the edges of jewellery.
Delicate, detailed and very good at making jewellery look like it has stepped straight out of a vintage jewellery box.

GIRDLE
noun | gur-dl
The outer edge of a gemstone - the part that separates the top of the stone from the bottom.
No, it's not something your grandma wore under her dress. Although we admit the name doesn't exactly help.

PAVÉ
noun | pah-vay
A setting style where lots of tiny gemstones are placed closely together, creating a surface that looks almost completely covered in sparkle.
Because apparently one diamond simply wasn't enough.

SOLDER
noun | sold-er
A metal alloy used by jewellers to join pieces of jewellery together during repairs and construction.
Think of it as the jewellery world's version of glue… except considerably more technical, considerably hotter, and definitely not something to try with the tube of craft glue in your kitchen drawer.

So there you have it: five jewellery words you can now casually drop into conversation and sound like you know exactly what you're talking about.

Remember that gorgeous ring we shared just a few days ago?

The one with the beautiful story behind it - the sentimental stones, the memories, and a husband who remembered exactly which pieces had meaning to his wife? ❤️

Well, there was actually another little chapter to that story…

When we were working through all of the jewellery this lovely couple had brought in, we realised there was far too much 9ct yellow gold for the ring design they had chosen.

Our client explained that she really had no use for the rest of the jewellery, but she was hoping we could find a way to use as much of it as possible.

So we asked the question:

“What about a second project? Is there something you’ve always wanted?”

And that question seemed to strike a nerve.

She thought about it and remembered something she had wanted for years…

A bangle!

Well, why not?

Rather than letting that beautiful gold sit forgotten in a drawer, we gave it a new purpose - and created a bangle from her very own gold.

There’s something incredibly special about finally bringing to life something you’ve coveted for years, especially when it’s made from jewellery that already carries a lifetime of memories.

It’s not just a new piece of jewellery.

It’s a little bit of her history, transformed into something she had always dreamed of owning. ✨

And we think that makes this bangle pretty special indeed.

Is Opal Really Bad Luck? 👀

October has one of the most beautiful - and possibly most misunderstood - birthstones in the jewellery box.

Opal.

With its flashes of pink, blue, green, orange and every colour in between, it's hardly surprising that opal has picked up a few stories and superstitions over the years.

One of the most famous is that opals are unlucky.

But where did that idea even come from?

The superstition appears to have been influenced by a mixture of folklore, literature and a particularly unfortunate piece of marketing history. Over time, stories began circulating that opals were associated with bad luck, particularly for people who didn't have October as their birth month.

And then came the books.

In the 19th century, Sir Walter Scott's novel Anne of Geierstein featured an opal with supernatural associations. The story is often credited with helping fuel the gemstone's unfortunate reputation.

The funny thing is, opals had actually been considered lucky and protective in many cultures long before this.

So depending on who you ask, an opal could be a symbol of good fortune, protection and hope… or a tiny little gemstone curse waiting to ruin your day. 😂

At Jewellers Vault, we're firmly in the “it's gorgeous, wear it” camp.

And honestly, when an opal catches the light and suddenly throws out a flash of electric blue or fiery orange, it's pretty hard to believe there's anything unlucky about it.

The Ring He Never Forgot 💙

This is possibly one of my favourite transformations we’ve ever had through the workshop - and honestly, the story behind it gave me goosebumps.

Many moons ago, our client was gifted a sapphire ring by her now-husband. It was her favourite piece of jewellery, not necessarily because it was the most valuable, but because it was the first piece of jewellery he ever gave her.

And after a lifetime of being worn and loved, it was definitely showing its age.

Unfortunately, the style of the original setting and the condition of the white sapphires meant that simply repairing the ring wasn't really an option. It would have been lovely to restore it exactly as it was, but sometimes jewellery reaches a point where a little more than a repair is needed.

So, very gently, we suggested a remake.

And that's when her face lit up.

Because rather than saying goodbye to the old ring, we could give it a whole new life - by bringing some of her other sentimental jewellery along for the journey.

The blue sapphires from the original ring were carefully reused, while the white sapphires were replaced with diamonds from her own jewellery. Then, a select few of her treasured rings were melted down and incorporated into the new piece.

Piece by piece, memory by memory, we handmade a brand-new ring that was still very much her old ring.

And then came our favourite part.

Her husband came to collect it on her behalf.

When he opened the box and saw the ring, he gasped.

He remembered it.

He remembered the ring he had given her all those years ago. He remembered the story behind it. And suddenly, this wasn't just a new piece of jewellery sitting in a box - it was a familiar little piece of their history, brought back to life.

That's what we love most about remodelling sentimental jewellery.

Sometimes the goal isn't to make something completely new.

It's to make something that feels like home. 💙

Same sapphires.
Her own diamonds.
Gold from treasured pieces.
A brand-new setting.

And a whole lifetime of memories still wrapped up inside it.
