#1 solid links. A chain with solid, rather than hollow links will last much longer and be less likely to break.

#2 solid gold, rather than plated. There are now many varieties of plated or ‘gold filled’ style chains. Depending on the metal the links are made from, the chain may not be able to be properly repaired if it’s made from a plated base metal.

#3 clasp soldered. Many clasps are simply linked closed onto the chain rather than soldered securely. A soldered clasp ensures, particularly if a pendant is worn on the chain, it will be less likely to come open with an accidental pull.

#4 If budget allows, select a chain with some weight (under 1.5grams is very light!). Purchasing a quality gold chain is likely to become a good long term investment should global gold prices continue to climb.

#5 See the chain in person before buying. Gold chains should all be stamped to indicate their gold content (eg. 375 is 9ct gold).
