This handmade platinum and 18ct yellow gold engagement was made for a couple that came to me wanting to design their own engagement ring, I prompted them for some inspiration and discovered that the design would be focused on form and structure as the client worked in industrial design. Initial thoughts began as a wide cigar style band in gold with an Emerald cut stone. It’s always great to have a starting point and after a few discussions the design evolved into something made for them.
Gemstones weren’t to be the sole focus of this ring but after a few appointments to view of Sapphires ranging in colours, from Sri Lankan Cornflower blue & Australian Blue/ Green to pale pink Padparadscha Sapphires. The individuality of the gemstones led the way till the clients discovered one that resonated with them – a beautiful and unique Australian Sapphire, the distinctive colour banding of this gem creating an illusion that draws the viewer into its sparkly depths.
For the band we took inspiration from a few of my original constructionist pieces that play with angles and shape. They liked the form of my “Curved Wall” design as well as the “Asymmetrical Sapphire Ring”, combining these elements to create a bold yet minimalistic ring that shows off the stone and engages the eye with refined perspectives. The bezel set Sapphire appears to float as it sits against the platinum wall, set with a total 20 round brilliant cut Diamonds that highlight the Sapphire when looking from above, yet also draws the eye as they trickle down the side of the band.
A truly timeless and intriguing design
