'Papilio ulysses'

Sterling Silver, Acrylic, Papilio ulysses Butterfly Wings, Australian Sapphires, Australian Dark Opals.

'Jewellery has long been a way for humans to gather, frame and possess elements of the natural world that we consider precious or rare. While making this piece, I found myself reflecting on my own desire to gather and hold onto things from nature, and on the tension between preserving a fragment of nature and making it our own, at a time when so much of the natural world feels increasingly fragile and at risk of slipping away.'

More often than not, the jewellery I make for others is a vessel for something precious, rather than being the precious item in itself. It might hold an idea, a memory, or a literal fragment of something treasured. I see jewellery as a kind of protective armour around these things, holding them safe and carrying their meaning forward.

I don't often make jewellery for myself, but for this exhibition I am sharing some things that are incredibly precious to me, and have created vessels to carry them forward. Making this collection has also led me to reflect on what draws us to gather and keep things we find precious, whether for the memories they hold or simply for their beauty, and what it means to make them our own.'

'See you in my dreams, Rosie'

Rosie's Hair, Sterling Silver, 9ct Gold, Quartz, Diamond, Opal, Black Spinel, Lapis Lazuli, Sapphire, Moonstone, Alexandrite.

'It has been more than eight years since Rosie passed, but she still comes to visit me in my dreams. I have kept her hair safe all this time, but until now, I haven't felt ready or known how I wanted to honour her. This talisman is a conduit to reach out across the ether, a way of reaching out to Rosie in the hope of encouraging her visits. I selected each gemstone for its metaphysical associations with amplification, spirit summoning and communication, bridging between planes, safe travel, dream exploration and eternity.'

'Nikki's Whiskers'

Nikki's Whiskers, Sterling Silver, Garnets, Black Spinels, Sapphires.

'These are Nikki's whiskers, naturally shed over many years. There are twenty-seven in total, nine for each pin. A very fortuitous number.
In many folk traditions, cat whiskers are considered good luck charms and are believed to protect against evil spirits. In witchcraft, they are used to help guide people through difficult times and offer protection when travelling.
Each pin is set with the favourite gemstones of the people I made these protective talismans for.'

'Lottia roseicapilla'

Limpet Shell, Galah Feathers, Sterling Silver, Brass, Stainless Steel.

'Like many, I have a need to forage, fossick, gather and happen upon curios from nature. When we find a feather or a curious shell, we recognise something precious in it. I made this brooch as a place to showcase these finds, and to celebrate the pleasure of searching for and gathering things we consider precious.
Anna and her mum Rosalie collect feathers and, for the past few years, have sent me their incredible summer collections. I hope I have done Anna proud by bringing her collected feathers into this work alongside my shell, and celebrating our shared love of searching and collecting.'

Accidentally distracted with from posting on here again by, well, life.
So here’s a photo dump 🧚‍♂️
It’s a bit of an exercise for me in sharing the realness of what I do 💁‍♀️
I can at times struggle with perfectionism and sharing my work (and my self, to be honest) in progress. I work hard to create to my best abilities, so the end product has always felt like the important thing. But I think I know that it’s really the journey, the discovering and f**k ups that make it all interesting.
That being said, I have so many beautiful projects that I’ve worked on in the last year that I haven’t shared… I just get a bit frozen with overwhelmed when it comes to posting them and over think it (if your jewellery, especially engagement/wedding rings haven’t made it on here, it’s not because I don’t love them it’s actually because of this!)
Any hoo, it’s a working progress, but I’m just considering how I turn up on here, or whatever future community sharing platform we go to next.

Some thoughts from my desk…

Just a heads up, this post does mention loss 🖤

As I was sitting at my desk finishing off these necklaces I was admiring the extra work I’ve been putting in on each necklace.
A while back I mentioned how the mechanical manufactured clasps (from one of the better quality suppliers) just keep breaking. I decided, even though it added at least a days work to the process, I would be hand making every clasps from now on.

Yep, these clasps take time to make, but I want to do my best to ensure they don’t break on you. As makers we sometimes can forget that the objects we make can become incredibly important to those that purchase them, and every bit of care should be taken to make to the best of our ability.

Once, a lady had told me that she had worn her Luna Crescens Necklace everyday for many years. I won’t share the full story, or details, but as her partner was passing way, the necklace became an actual physical point of connection between them both. To the one who shared this incredibly personal and moving story with me, just know I think about you and your partner every time I make these necklaces.

I guess I wanted to write all this to say, for me it’s not just a product I make, but a way I connect with people, and that I deeply care about those connections. Good things take time, and I’m taking more time than ever to make the jewellery I make.

Also, sometimes things do break, but let’s make objects that we can be repaired x

Aquamarine + 18ct Gold Sunrise Engagement Ring for Carly 🌞

Last year Carly trusted me to remake her engagement ring (swipe to the end to see the original ring).

I always feel very privileged to be able to work on these special projects. Remakes require a lot of trust, as there are added layers of sentimentality, and complexity in the materials. It can be a bit of risk for a jeweller, things can sometimes go wrong, surprises in the materials pop up, and it may mean making the piece once or twice until you get it right.

In the height of summer this year, we got married! 💐🧚🏽‍♂️
Our special day was captured beautifully by the delightful 📷
We were married by the magnanimous in the dappled light of the , with the most delicious of drink and food provided by our supremely talented maker friends and . Our flowers were grown and arranged by the munificent .gardens and our menus and signage designed by the indefatigable .design. rounded out the feast with a wedding cake comprised of one hundred delectable donuts before we danced the night away to the wild cumbian grooves of .
What a day, what a night! Thank you sooo much dear family, friends, hosts and contributors for making this preposterously wonderful occasion the resounding success that it was, and for sharing your love and kindness on this most special of days, and all of the other days and ways in which our lives entwine and unfold.
We deeply cherish our matrimonial memories, and are most greatly humbled by the love shown towards us.
