Spring school holidays, spent adventuring through Victoria’s Gippsland. Mallacoota, then Metung. Long days of water, walks and boating.

First slide, Genoa Falls, wearing the pieces I reach for without thinking, my Double Circle ring and a marquise diamond band. They come on every trip, and they’ll hold the memory of this one long after the sand is out of the car.

Time for family and nature. A little reset, and some peace. I hope you are enjoying Spring too.

Why I set this coloured gemstone in rings meant to be worn for decades.

Postcard from Metung, where the water is still and the black swans drift past like they own the place (they do).

For centuries, Europe believed a black swan couldn’t exist. It became a phrase for the impossible. Then someone sailed to this side of the world and found them gliding across the water, as if they’d been waiting all along.

I think about that a lot. The things you’re told can’t be real, until you see them. It’s the same feeling I chase in every piece I make.

Hope your public holiday was a slow one. The gallery was closed today, but the studio is always open online. Back at 28 Russell Place tomorrow, 11am to 5pm.

This is what a sapphire looks like before anyone touches it. Honestly, it looks like a wet pebble.

When I am buying in Queensland, the stones come to me like this. Dull, waterworn, a bit like coloured glass. There is nothing glamorous about it.
The trick is to hold the stone up to the light. That is when you see what is inside: the colour bands, the clarity, the shape hiding under the skin.

Then comes the gamble. You never fully know what a piece of rough will give you until the cutter starts. A stone can lose more than half its weight in cutting, and sometimes a colour band you loved ends up exactly where the cut has to go.

That uncertainty is part of the pleasure. Every finished parti sapphire in my work started as one of these, chosen by eye, on a folding table, in the middle of Queensland.
