I’m still finding the words... 🌙
To be the muse for Heather B. Swann’s new exhibition, Melanie and The Night Falls at Station Gallery, has been an almost indescribably surreal experience.
As an artist myself (founder of Pieces of Eight Gallery and Melanie Katsalidis Jewellery), I’m used to shaping form. But to simply be, to allow Heather to translate my presence into her world of dark, sensual symbolism, was truly humbling.
My name, Melanie, means “dark,” and Heather used this ancient meaning to anchor a suite of paintings deeply aligned with melancholia and the rich metaphor of the night.
The final reveal left me speechless: it resulted in FOUR paintings! I never imagined my portrait would become the central anchor for such a profound exploration.
A detail that feels intensely personal: Heather depicted me holding the moon. During the pandemic, I began ritualistic journaling around the new and full moons, becoming fascinated by cycles and time. To see that quiet, personal journey reflected in her magnificent work is extraordinary.
Thank you, Heather, for seeing me and transforming my likeness into an ancient symbol. What an experience. ✨
