Yarrabing Wetland Reserve

Yarrabing Wetland Reserve Wetlands Yarrabing Wetland Reserve is located at the end of Magnolia St, Wantirna. Along the Dandenong Creek Bike trail. The reserve is just under 2 hectares.

Until the 1960s Dandenong Creek used to snake twice up and down this reserve before it was replaced by a straight channel. In the last 10 years the Knox City Council in conjunction with The First Friends of Dandenong Creek and Melbourne water turned the depression that was left behind back into a wetland area. The street run off all runs into the wetlands area. In the wetlands there are many diffe

rent water birds that come and visit through out the year. There is also some significant Manna Gums (Eucalyptus viminalis) that are still thriving. Along with understory trees like silver wattle (Acacia dealbata) as well as a few swamp paperbark (Melaleuca ericifolia).

THIS WEEKEND

Victorian National Parks Association are hosting Walk and talk in the Dandenong Ranges:

"Saturday, 16 May | 10:30 am - 1:00 pm

Join VNPA, local filmmaker Lewi Haskins and local ecologist Alex Maisey for a guided walk and talk in the Dandenong Ranges National Park. We’ll visit an area hit by a windstorm in 2021, talk about their recovery and how some areas are being smashed by loophole logging.

Since 2021, VNPA and local community groups have been monitoring the recovery of forests and wildlife in the Dandenong Ranges National Park after a windstorm in 2021. Fallen trees, knocked over by the storm, are doing exactly what they should, feeding fungi, holding moisture and rebuilding habitat.

But in recent weeks, Forest Fire Management Victoria have been ripping out fallen trees with heavy machinery, damaging tree ferns and living trees in the process. The work is guided by outdated info rather than up-to-date science. We’ve been working with filmmaker Lewi Haskins to document what’s happening on the ground.

Who’s coming to the wetland this weekend to help the City Nature Challenge??

It’s a fun and collaborative opportunity to learn about local biodiversity, participate in friendly competition and find your inner citizen scientist.

Over 600+ cities are participating globally. Knox is joining forces with 23 neighbouring Councils to form the Greater Melbourne collaborative.

During the 4-day challenge, explore, discover, and snap a photo or record the sound of any wild plant or animal and upload it to iNaturalist app. Include location details to compete and the city with the most observations wins.

Agapanthus are pretty and popular, but many home gardeners are surprised by how easily they can spread. 🌱
