Pieces of Eight Pieces of Eight is a contemporary jewellery and small object gallery in Melbourne, Australia.

We specialise in creating bespoke precious rings, working as a conduit between our clients and artists to create pieces of significance. The gallery is located in Melbourne's iconic Royal Arcade, the oldest surviving arcade in Australia. It runs from Bourke Street to Little Collins St, parallel to Elizabeth Street. Find us under the clock at Shop 27, hosted within the Melanie Katsalidis retail store.

Gem School is in session: TOURMALINE

For centuries, tourmaline went by other names. Traders and jewellers sold it as ruby, emerald and sapphire, and it still turns up in disguise: the peach stone in Suzi Zutic’s Ophir ring was first sold to her as a sapphire.

Gem School: Tourmaline, October’s birthstone.

Its name began as a word for a handful of mixed stones. “Turmali” was what Sri Lankan traders called the colourful gems they sifted from river gravels, and fittingly, alongside opal, tourmaline is found in more colours than any other gem.

There is one gemstone no camera ever quite captures. Happy birthday to the October babies, your birthstone is opal.

Mine started with a high-school trip to Coober Pedy, then a dinner party in 2014 with my friends Georgie and Al from Alpha60 that turned into a collaboration. Wanting opal cut into my own shapes meant going to the source: meeting the miners, buying rough direct.

A bespoke piece goes from first conversation to design, stone selection and making by hand in Melbourne. Each stage takes care and time, so we ask for a little notice.

You don’t need to arrive with a design. Most commissions begin with an occasion, a feeling, or a stone that has been in the family for generations.

Here is how a bespoke piece comes together at Pieces of Eight: one or two conversations to settle the design, then approximately six to eight weeks to make, by the artist whose practice suits you best.

The dress will be stored away. The flowers will fade. The jewellery remains.

The pieces worn on your wedding day tend to outlast almost everything else from it. A ring, a pair of earrings, a fine chain: worn again to anniversaries, graduations, and ordinary Tuesdays years later.

Our Bridal Styling sessions are a considered, 30 minute appointment at the gallery, built around your day, your dress and your own instincts. Earrings that hold their own against a veil. A fine bracelet that sits so naturally you forget it’s new. Cufflinks for the groom. And something quietly personal for the wider circle: bridesmaids, groomsmen and parents on both sides.

Many of our pieces are made to order, so we recommend booking at least six weeks before your day.

Your new favourite ring is named after a film character.

Welcome to the world of Tessa Blazey.

Gallery director Melanie Katsalidis visited Tessa in her Melbourne studio. Her work stems from sculpture, interior design and jewellery engineering.

All three taught her the same questions at different scales how a form sits in space, where its weight falls, and what the negative space is doing. Her pieces feel both ancient and futuristic. Rough, uncut stones sit beside precise geometric cuts, all held in sculptural, architectural settings.

Tessa names each piece after a film character, like Mia Wallace, Leeloo, Korben and Princess Nausicaä. Each character’s temperament and
mood shapes the choice of stone and setting.
