Community 🙌

We love this little corner of the world we call home. And we love seeing our community come together to make it an even better place for the next generation.

There's been an enormous amount of passion, planning and hard work behind the community-led vision for Burrill Lake Lions Park, including the proposal for a brand-new skatepark.

It's an exciting opportunity to create something special for our local kids and teenagers. Somewhere to get outside, be active, connect with friends, build confidence and feel part of their community.

But we're not there yet.

Council is currently asking for community feedback, and this is where YOUR voice really matters.

The current infrastructure plan places a potential Burrill Lake skatepark more than 10 years into the future. We believe our young people deserve opportunities like this sooner.

So much work has already gone into getting this project to this point. Now we need our community to get behind it and help demonstrate just how important it is.

If you'd love to see a skatepark at Burrill Lake, please take a few minutes to have your say.

You don't have to be a skater. You don't even have to have kids. Just someone who believes in investing in the future of our beautiful community.

Folk storytelling, country hooks and bluegrass grit

Four-time Golden Guitar nominee and Aotearoa Music Award winner, Jenny Mitchell, joins forces with Newcastle’s free-range bluegrass band Midnight Chicken for a special run of shows in 2027, featuring their new single “Mr Cotter’s Ridge.” Produced by Shane Nicholson, the single tells the true story of an 1860s farmer who refused to cut down three ancient gum trees.

Known for songs that are both nostalgic and powerful, Jenny recently supported the iconic Kasey Chambers on a 32-date Australian tour and kicked off 2026 opening for global superstars The Lumineers. Now based in Melbourne, on this tour she’ll be sharing songs from her catalogue - and new work - surrounded by Midnight Chicken’s intricate arrangements and warm harmonies.

Hatched and hand-raised in Newcastle, NSW, Midnight Chicken’s wild and wonderful take on bluegrass has been turning heads across Australia - and on their sold-out New Zealand tour with Jenny in 2026. Blending tradition with a playful edge, their self-titled debut album has connected with fans of country, folk, bluegrass & everything in between.

Together, Jenny & Midnight Chicken will deliver a night of storytelling, string-band magic, and a little bit of mischief.
