🌈 It’s officially the month of OPAL 🌈
Opals can come from many different mines such as lightning ridge and Coober Pedy being the main ones but you’ll also see some Andamooka, Mintabie, Grawin, Whitecliffs, Winton and more.
Solid opal are the more popular stone, they are their full natural stone that has been carved and polished with nothing added to it. Colours vary depending on mine and they can have a more opaque appearance at times. They can range in various pricing due to the quality, carats and colour. The higher the price range, the higher grade and flashier it is but that’s not to say even some of the more budget friendly stones can pull of some competition with the high grades.
Doublet Opals are a solid opal sometimes thin, sometimes thick that just need a bit of help. Sometimes for structural reasons but mainly to help make the stone pop more in colour. A backing will be added, black or gray potch or sometimes boulder. The colours really pop and are alot more solid and less opaqueness. They tend to be a more budget friendly version of solid opal but you can still get some really high quality doublets.
Some of the stones featured below are solids and doublets
