🥄 Think Your Cutlery or Tableware Is Solid Silver? Read This First

Many tea sets, trays and cutlery look silver, but most are silver plated, not solid silver. Before visiting us, try these quick checks 👇

🔍 Stamps
Usually plated if marked: EPNS / E.P.N.S, EP, A1, Silver Plate, Nickel Silver
✔️ Solid silver usually shows: 925, Sterling, or traditional hallmarks
(Plated items contain very little silver and usually have no scrap value.)

🧲 Magnet Test
• Magnet sticks → Almost always NOT solid silver
• No magnet → May be silver (needs testing)

🧪 Rust Check
Silver tarnishes (black/dull) but NEVER rusts.
👉 Orange/red rust usually = plated base metal

🔊 Sound (Ping) Test
• Real silver → Clear ringing sound
• Plated/base metals → Dull sound
(Best on coins, bars & heavier pieces)

🧊 Ice Test
Silver conducts heat extremely well.
• Real silver melts ice very fast
• Plated/stainless melts slower

🎨 Wear Spots
• Different metal showing through → Usually plated
• Same colour throughout → Possibly solid silver

⚖️ Weight
• Heavy/dense → Possibly silver
• Light/hollow → Often plated or stainless

👃 Smell Test
• Little to no smell → Often silver
• Strong metallic/copper smell → Usually base metal

⚠️ Avoid These (Can Damage Value)
❌ Scratch testing
❌ Filing or cutting
❌ Acid test kits
❌ Heavy polishing over hallmarks

⭐ Good To Know
Even if items pass some tests, many inherited/vintage tableware sets are still plated. Sterling tableware is much less common than people think.
