That opal might not be a solid opal 👀

Solid vs Doublet vs Triplet — here’s how to tell the difference.

Solid, doublet or triplet — they can look very similar from the top, but they’re actually very different.

A solid opal is naturally solid opal all the way through.

A doublet opal is a thin layer of precious opal attached to a darker backing, which helps enhance the colour and play-of-colour.

A triplet opal adds another layer — usually a clear protective cap over the opal layer, with a dark backing underneath.

None of these automatically means “bad” — but when you’re buying opal jewellery, you should know exactly what you’re paying for. 💎
