đź’Ť Just inherited jewellery?

Before you do anything, STOP.

I’ve seen people unknowingly lose thousands of dollars by making these common mistakes:

❌ Selling it before knowing what it’s worth
❌ Cleaning it with the wrong products
❌ Removing old boxes, paperwork or receipts
❌ Assuming it’s costume jewellery because it “looks old”
❌ Dividing pieces among family before documenting everything

Inherited jewellery can hold significant financial, historical, and sentimental value. Once certain mistakes are made, that value can be impossible to recover.

As a jewellery valuer and gemologist, I’ve helped countless families navigate inherited jewellery collections—and the first steps matter more than most people realise.

Most people assume their jewellery insurance policy will simply “cover everything.”

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

As a jewellery valuer, I’ve seen far too many people discover the fine print only after making a claim.
The good news? A little knowledge now can save a lot of disappointment later.

Whether you’ve inherited jewellery, own a treasured engagement ring, or have a collection you’ve built over time, understanding what you’re actually insured for is just as important as having insurance in the first place.

đź’Ž The tiniest details often tell the biggest stories.

When examining jewellery, one of the first things I look for with a loupe is the hallmark. These tiny stamps can reveal valuable clues about a piece’s origin, age, and precious metal content.

🔍 What to look for:
• Metal fineness marks (9ct, 14ct, 18ct, Platinum, Sterling)
• Maker’s marks
• Assay office marks
• Date letters (on some antique pieces)
• Import or export marks

But here’s the catch…

Hallmarks can be worn, altered, misread, or even missing entirely. A hallmark is just one piece of the puzzle—not proof of authenticity on its own.

A good loupe allows you to see details that are invisible to the naked eye and can completely change your understanding of a piece.

Next time you’re sorting through inherited jewellery, vintage finds, or your own collection, take a closer look. You might be surprised by what those tiny marks reveal.
