Quick overnight trip out to Mooralla/Beear Fossicking Reserve back in February. We were able to pick full geodes of Smokey Quartz and loose crystals right out of the wall we were working. Biggest single crystal for the weekend came in at 49mm long.

I got out for a day trip around the Ararat area chasing a new spot that is rumored to produce some nice crystals. After hiking for about an hour I found an area where the bedrock protruded into a creek and thought it would be a good spot to try some crevicing and to test pan the area. In my first pan I found a nice formed crystal that had unfortunately broken at some stage as it eroded into the creek. After a couple more test pans I moved further up the creek to where I found a large water worn clear Quartz crystal just laying on the surface. A few more pans produced a nice water worn Smokey Quartz as well as a beautiful little Smokey Quartz specimen on matrix. Hopefully with a bit more research I will be able to find the source of the crystals and find a couple nice larger specimens.
