Trent Firth is the mastermind behind Sydney’s watchmaking education, having taught at TAFE for over four-decades. He’s quietly incubated legions of watchmakers locally and abroad, and is an absolute legend of the industry.

In the short time we’ve known each other, we’ve connected immensely over a hidden obsession for the lost trade of the Australian watch industry. If you’ve seen my research page Angus Z you would have seen my deep-dive into this lost world. We bring you ‘THE VEIL’.

On Halloween, the veil between the living and the dead is said to grow thin.

At the heart of VEIL lies a death’s-head moth, its skull suspended beneath a coffin-cut rutilated quartz. Within the clear crystal, fine needles of rutile, a naturally occurring titanium dioxide mineral, form dark and golden spikes, trapped within the stone as it formed. The moth rests just beyond the surface, visible through the quartz yet forever out of reach, caught between two worlds.

We make one limited-edition ring every month.

In November, we’d like to make yours!

Here’s the deal: draw us a ring featuring Citrine — November’s yellow birthstone. That’s the only rule. Metal, shape, style, size of the stone, all yours to decide.

If we pick your design, we make it in the workshop, you keep your design free, and we send you a $1,000 voucher on top. Your name goes on the release. And you don’t need to be able to draw. Some of our favourite entries so far are biro on lined paper — we’ve got a CAD team to make it look good. We just want your idea!

How to enter:

1. Grab the template — link in our bio and website

2. Draw your ring and tick your metal

3. Tell us the story behind it (this counts for a lot)

4. Email it to [email protected], or tag us in it

Entries close Monday 28 September. We read every single one, and we reply to every single one!
