Before opal became October’s birthstone, it had already gathered centuries of meaning. ✨

Across ancient Rome, Greece and later European tradition, opal was surrounded by stories of hope, love, purity, truth and foresight.

Much of that belongs to folklore rather than fact but perhaps that is part of the fascination. Few gemstones have inspired so much symbolism, imagination and curiosity across so many generations.

Nature rarely works in straight lines. Great jewellery knows when not to ask it to. ✨

This Australian opal draws its presence from an entirely natural form, framed by a sculptural diamond setting that sharpens rather than softens its individuality.

There is a deliberate tension between the two: the irregularity of the gemstone, the precision of the setting, the intensity of blue and green against the brilliance of diamonds.

Behind the art of “Blue Symphony” lies the remarkable complexity of working with Australian boulder opal. ✨

Unlike gemstones cut to standard shapes, boulder opal forms within its ironstone host rock, developing its own irregular contours, planes and proportions. Cutting it calls for careful judgement: what to reveal, what to preserve and how best to bring its play-of-colour to life.

And the craftsmanship does not end there.

Each setting must respond to the individual gemstone. There is no universal template, particularly when several boulder opals are being brought together within the same design story.

“Blue Symphony” shows that beautifully. Across the earrings and ring, vivid blues and greens move differently through each natural opal, while Dr Renata Bernard’s 18K gold and diamond settings follow their individual forms rather than asking them to conform.

The result is harmony without uniformity, with every gemstone retaining the character that made it extraordinary in the first place.

Australian boulder opals are shaped by nature rather than cut to a standard formula, so finding two gemstones with enough harmony in colour, scale and character to belong together is never straightforward.

For the “Blue Symphony” earrings, Dr Renata Bernard worked with the individuality of each opal rather than trying to disguise their differences. Their vivid blues and greens respond differently to the light, yet together they create a beautifully balanced pair.

There are moments when art becomes the only language that comes close. ✨

At the heart of “Newton’s Attraction” is an extraordinary 9.12ct natural Australian black boulder opal from Winton, Queensland, remarkable for the clarity, intensity and almost electric layering of its play-of-colour.

Within the gemstone, saturated blues and greens appear to move across one another, interrupted by flashes of incandescent colour. It calls to mind the restless skies and heightened palette of Van Gogh’s years at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, yet even that comparison seems inadequate.

No painter could place these colours precisely where they appear. No hand could reproduce their depth, movement or changing relationship with light.

Nature created this composition once.



As October’s birthstone, opal is often chosen for its meaning. At this level, however, it enters another realm entirely: a gemstone for the serious collector, where rarity, artistry and natural brilliance become inseparable.

For October’s birthstone, the design begins with what nature has already created. ✨

In this glimpse behind the making of “Blue Symphony”, Dr Renata Bernard (.bernard.om) works around an exceptional 4.97ct Australian dark boulder opal from Winton, Queensland.

Natural opals do not arrive in predetermined shapes. Their contours, proportions and play-of-colour are entirely their own, which means every line of the setting must respond to the individual gemstone.

As a GIA gemmologist, NCJV valuer and jewellery designer, Renata considers the opal from every angle before refining the design around it.

For “Blue Symphony”, the result is an 18K yellow gold setting with diamonds that follows the gemstone’s natural form while allowing its shifting colour to remain unmistakably at the centre.

This is October birthstone jewellery created without a template, around an Australian opal that can never be repeated.
