Mokume gane paired with a cuttlefish casting, set with a lab created star sapphire.
Mokume gane translates from Japanese as “wood grain metal”. It is an ancient Japanese metalworking procedure that fuses distinct layers of coloured metals into a single block. The block (billet) is then repeatedly hammered and patterned with a variety of punches to create the wood grain effect.
In this piece I have used silver and copper.
Cuttlefish casting is a metal casting method that uses the internal chalky shell of a cuttlefish as a single use mold for molten silver.

I just finished this pendant using some of the mokume gane I’ve been working on. I paired it with a cuttlefish casting and it’s set with a lab created star sapphire.
The textures in the cuttlefish work perfectly with the swirls of the mokume gane.
I see the desert meeting the ocean, tidal swirls, an incoming storm … what do you see?

I’ve been learning the mokume gane technique with Brenda Coleman

Simply put, you start with a ‘billet’ comprised of several highly compressed, fused layers of different metals. In this case I’m using silver and copper (gold is way too expensive).

The billet is forged (hammered) to compress it even more and then steel punches add the details. The punched shapes are then ground away to enhance the design.

The billet goes through a rolling mill many times revealing the created pattern.

When you really know what you’re doing you can control the pattern, I’m nowhere near to that level plus I like the randomness of not following a recipe.

Now I have to live with it for a while and figure out just what I’m going to make.

I’m making some earrings for Craft NSW exhibition at Mosman Gallery next weekend, August 8 & 9, 10am-4 pm.
They still have to be ground back and then refired but I’m super happy with them so far.
