In spending over 30 years on the bench I have seen some parts of the industry that haven’t changed in centuries, and some parts that have evolved in leaps and bounds. What hasn’t changed is the satisfaction of making something precious and handing it over to be worn and loved.
I use gold, platinum and silver the same way artisans have for hundreds of years, but I have seen changes in metal technology that has improved appearance and wear.
We now also have the ability to use CAD technology to help create intricate pieces and show clients design elements that honestly my rough sketches have just never managed.
The hand tools I use are used by jewellers the world over and have been for hundreds of years. Hammers, anvils, rolling mills, draw plates and pliers. This trusty saw frame is the one I have used since I was an apprentice and my boss used before me.
But I think the largest change I have seen is the introduction of lab grown diamonds, and that has shifted what is possible and what we can offer clients. They are real diamonds, chemically and visually identical to mined stones, but created in a controlled environment rather than formed over millions of years. The difference isn’t in how they look or wear, it’s how they are made and what they cost. This has been particularly relevant for engagement rings. With the cost of living where it is, clients come in with a clear idea if the piece they want to propose with but may find that a mined diamond isn’t within reach in the size they had in mind. This once would have meant adjusting the design or stone size and quality but jewellers are now able to offer an option that meets the aesthetic while changing what is achievable within a budget.
I still work with mined diamonds of course, but it has been interesting to see a new technology that expands what is possible for people walking through my door. That is especially clear when it is helping clients create something meaningful to mark the start of their lives together.

To celebrate 30 years of Meakins Jewellers, I am giving away a voucher to one if my favourite local business every week for a month, and for our final week, it’s the wonderful Harley and Johns Seafood in Fairy Meadow.
We have been customers for years. There is always beautiful fresh seafood, but what I love just as much are the things they make in house, like the amazing fish cakes, and other creative offerings that tells you this is a team that genuinely cares about what they are doing. It’s that attention to detail that keeps us going back. I also love all the amazing recipes thet share .
Harley and Johns has been a part of the Illawarra for over 20 years, and as the first independent fish market in NSW to achieve sustainable seafood certification, they are very much a business built for the long haul. Fitting for our final week of celebrations. We are giving away a $200 voucher to one of our lucky followers to get to know them a little better.

Over 30 years Meakins Jewellers has called three addresses home - two on Crown St, and for the last 15 years, our current home on Keira St.
Looking back at these old photos across three decades I am amused by how dated some of my choices look now. At the time they felt modern, but trends change fast.
Our current home is perfect for us. We are lucky to be inside a beautiful state heritage listed building, with double frontage windows looking out onto one of Wollongongs busiest intersections. My little workshop gives me an excellent view of day-to-day Wollongong and I enjoy feeling like I am nestled into the heart of the city.
Last year we completed a full interior renovation. The space is fresh and bright, with plenty of natural light, which is essential when helping clients choose gemstones or look at fine details.
One of the things I didn’t anticipate when I started out was how much community exists between the small businesses in the city. Across all three locations we have had wonderful neighbours, often other small business owners whose own stories were unfolding alongside ours, creating a shared history. That has been one of the unexpected gifts of 30 years in one city. Thanks Wollongong.

To celebrate 30 years of Meakins Jewellers I am giving away a voucher to one of my favourite local businesses every week for a month.
Week 3 goes to somewhere very close to my heart. is the gym where I train. As a jeweller I spend a lot if time sitting at a workbench and working with my hands. This puts a surprising amount of strain on my upper body, and makes taking care of myself physically really important for avoiding pain and ensuring I can continue doing what I love. I am so grateful to have found a place that genuinely helps me do that. What I love most about AC is the culture they have built. Connor has really prioritised creating a place where everyone can feel at home. AC attracts everyone from people like me, moving to stay healthy and sane, right through to professional athletes, and everyone is equally welcomed and looked after.
The facilities are exceptional: free weights, an extensive array of machines, cardio and a recovery centre that genuinely changes how your body feels. But the real gems are the trainers and the staff. My trainer, Jamie Crowe (.first.step) is amazing at helping me shake off the stress of the week and keeping my body feeling comfortable and strong. He is just one of the wonderful team at Athletic Culture who show up every day with authentic care, encouragement and knowledge that you can actually feel. Athletic Culture is a small, independent gym doing something really special. I am so glad they are a part of our community, and am excited to be sharing a prize that invites one of you to come along and see what I am talking about.
We are giving away a 21 day pass for the gym (including access to all classes) and a welcome pack which includes a recovery session, a body scan, a $100 voucher for .au, a towel, a protein shaker and some other goodies to try.

Thirty years is a long time to watch a city from a workshop window. Wollongong hasn’t stood still in that time. The population has grown, the mall has stretched further, parking has become it’s own conversation. Landmarks that once felt permanent have quietly disappeared (the old mall arches among them) while new ones have taken their place, sometimes unexpectedly (the palm tree up a pole still gets people talking).
From my little shop I’ve seen some big moments pass by. In 2000 the Olympic torch came right past the shopfront. The street was full, the energy was high and I was lucky enough to take it all in.
I have seen familiar faces, met plenty of new ones and made thousands of pieces of jewellery, and then came COVID. Lockdowns marked the longest I have been away from the shop since I took ownership. It was a strange stretch of time, but one that made to loyalty of our client base very clear. People went out of their way to show support, not because they had to but because they chose to. That’s not something I will ever forget.
The city looks different than it did 30 years ago, but what hasn’t changed is the rhythm inside the shop, clients coming and going, conversations and catch ups that span over the years and now often children and grandchildren of clients that I have known all that time. I have been lucky to spend these 30 years in Wollongong and I appreciate everyone who has been a part of that.

To celebrate 30 years of Meakins Jewellers I am giving away a voucher to one of my favourite local businesses every week for 4 weeks, and our second amazing business is Lox Hair Co.
Good hair and good jewellery go hand in hand but I have chosen Lox Hair Co for another reason too, hairdressing, like jewellery is a trade built on an apprenticeship. You learn by spending years beside someone more experienced than you, practicing until the skill lives in your hands as well. I have a lot of respect for the businesses that not only deliver excellent work to their clients but are committed to passing that knowledge on for the next generation to learn their craft properly. Lox is one of those businesses.
It’s a beautiful salon on Court Lane in Wollongong, led by the very talented Lorren and her skilled team. Warm and welcoming and exactly the kind of place that makes you feel looked after.
We are giving away a $200 voucher for one of our lucky followers to get to know this business a bit better.
