June’s Birthstones | Pearl, Alexandrite and Moonstone
✨ Born in June? You are exceptionally lucky. Not one birthstone, but three, each with its own gemological story and spectacular beauty.
Pearl is the only gem of organic origin, formed when a mollusc secretes concentric layers of nacre around an irritant within its shell. That layered structure, known as nacre thickness, is the key quality factor determining a pearl’s lustre, surface and overall value. Natural pearls are extraordinarily rare today; the vast majority on the market are cultured, produced through sustainable farming across Japan, Australia, Tahiti and China.
Alexandrite is a chromium-bearing variety of chrysoberyl and one of the rarest gems in existence. Its remarkable colour change, from bluish green in daylight to purplish red under incandescent light, is caused by the way chromium absorbs light across the visible spectrum. Fine natural alexandrite with a strong colour change commands prices that rival top rubies and emeralds.
Moonstone is a feldspar mineral whose optical phenomenon, known as adularescence, is produced by the interference of light between alternating layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar. The finest specimens, prized for their blue sheen and transparency, come from Sri Lanka. Body colour, sheen intensity and degree of transparency are the primary value factors.
🌟 Three birthstones. Three completely different gemological identities. Which one is yours?
