Thick branches, large oval front, the perfect amount of oversized for a classy anonymity.

We closed the doors of our temporary location at 88 Boulevard Vauban in Marseille two weeks ago and have had just enough time back in Brussels to let the dust, emotions and frames settle into place.

We are often overwhelmed by the feelings of family around our store in Brussels, but were so surprised to find the same feeling more than 1000km away from our home base. From all the time, energy and care that was brought by our team in Brussels, the many helping hands who joined us in Marseille, to all our neighbours who greeted us at the beginning and end of each day, to all the people who passed by, asked questions and got invested into our world.

Thank you to focus focus ® for planting the original seeds for us in Marseille, for being the best optics collaborator and for launching into this crazy journey of glasses manufacturing with us. Thank you to for so generously opening their doors, giving us the space and curating the most fitting surroundings we could have hoped for. Thank you to Melissa Mariller , Arnaud Eubelen and Mathilde Hiley for creating the pieces and photographs that lived with our frames, for working so collaboratively alongside us - and thank you to LILA NOIR for adorning the space with fresh and beautiful flowers throughout. Thank you to the best neighbours, 🍽️ FiGuRe 🍷 for being so generous with their time, w**e and everything else.

We couldn’t have imagined this mad adventure of Bidules ‘en transit’ to be filled with as much care and love! Thank you again, to all involved, for making it the best month we could’ve hoped for.

Bidules isn’t completely gone from Marseille though! you can still find the mod.468 at focus focus ® as we speak. Go find a bit of us there, and much of us back in Brussels.

Julie (Mol, 2003) is a visual and olfactory artist based in Brussels. We like to think we helped in the visual aspect of her practice with a square ‘TV’ frame by Lizon (Morez, FR) from the 1970s. As for the olfactory side, we can only pray that the smell of our briot (lens cutting machine) was somehow a source of inspiration.

She told us about a recent project she was most particularly proud of, entitled ‘C’est toi qui part’ produced in Hasselt this year. It was an immaterial performance taking place across eight rooms, where her own body odour was slowly dispersed through the space using a custom-made ventilation system. She spent five months making a tincture from her own body odour, which became the main material of the work. Visiting her studio, we were most definitely impressed by the precise, mad-scientist aspects that come with creating olfactory art.

We’re often curious about how and what people collect, and Julie told us she doesn’t really call herself a collector, that she ‘accidentally’ collects small things without meaning to. Especially those with distinctive textures or smells; “I think I’m more interested in collecting traces than objects themselves.” An elusive collection still counts, we think.

She did leave us with this little advice though; ‘Never throw away a strange little bottle. You will eventually find a reason to use it.’

A little close-up on the new Errebi and Rebo stock which just landed in the shop.

Think of these as a new episode in the series of widely distributed Italian-made 1970s-80s reading glasses we’ve recently added to our shelves. Much like the Giesse stock, these were all ready-to-wear frames with standardised reading correction. Not unlike the ones you find at the grocery store counter today, although made, in our humble opinion, with higher quality. This often means the correction in both eyes is the same, which is very rarely the case for all of us glasses wearing people. We’re currently busy popping out the heavy (and not so comfy) original lenses, and refitting them with custom modern lenses (corrective or not).

Available in a range of sizes and colours, in both optical and sunnies.

Pass by to try them on, or witness one of us popping out a strong +4 lens on our workbench - Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30 to 18.30 (Friday from 11.30).

Let us introduce you to the one and only, the M.O.A ‘Man’.

M.O.A (Manifattura Ottica Antoniana) was founded in Toscolano Maderno in 1948 by Giuseppe Maffizzoli, manufacturing frames for major European brands. The turning point for the brand came in 1975 when Silvana Maffizzoli and her husband Carlo Merlo opened a new production facility, also in Toscolano. The M.O.A ‘Man’ was produced there until 1982, designed by Carlo Merlo.

The ‘Man’ is available in light grey, demi-amber and a deep burgundy - all options ready as optical and sunnies.

Pass by to try them on anytime Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30 to 18.30 (Friday from 11.30).

Also available in Marseille until this Saturday the 26th (run, don’t walk!) from 11.00 to 19.00.

Meet the two designers behind Bidules ‘En Transit’ space(ship?) in Marseille.

Melissa Mariller (France, 1990) develops a practice around the displacement of domestic objects. She extracts them from their original context and intervenes on their materiality, forms and uses, and de-domesticate them. For the bench, the large mirror and the small flower pots in Vauban she used welding as a drawing technique, it’s so beautiful - you can’t turn a blind eye on it!

Arnaud Eubelen (Belgium, 1991) works at the intersection of design and sculpture, using reclaimed industrial and urban materials. He reappropriates them by shifting their uses and contexts, revealing their qualities and stories. We owe him the reclaimed glass shelf unit in the window at Ravenstein and the wall-mounted light in the staircase to our little eye-test room too.

Their piece -some still available for sale- are on view 88 Boulevard Vauban (13006 Marseille) until September 26.

You also have a chance to talk welding with Mélissa IRL this Thursday during the closing drink from (18h30 - 21h).

Meet Elian (Antwerp, 2003) the proud owner of the mod.FA-342 (00s,JP) from the FACTORY900 drop we released in February.

We pride ourselves on being good hosts, but when we met Elian at the shop it was clear we had met our hosting match. It was made evident through his interview - his life, work and free time revolves mostly around his friends and welcoming people from any walk of life into his world and projects.

Elian is a designer and artist, but also one of the driving forces behind The Toad and the Teaspoon , a canteen at track.brussels connecting artistic practice, social inclusion and daily nourishment. They offer affordable lunches to commuters, workers, artists and neighbours - as well as cultural events, performances, workshops and participatory cooking with Groot Eiland trainees, using ingredients from their farm. We highly recommend keeping up with what they’re doing - fun and important in equal measure!

We just hope that in the midst of the kitchen rush Elian’s frame doesn’t get too close to the oven (psa - glasses and heat is not a match made in heaven).

Developed in collaboration with focus focus ® , the mod.468 is a newly finished frame made with the same philosophy as the rest of the glasses at Bidules; bringing deadstock back to life. All components of the 468 were sourced and matched from the 1970s, featuring a strong straight-brow front, temples with original wire core, and period hinges.

Originally prototyped entirely by hand, in-house, by our chef d’atelier Mathias in Brussels, the series was then manufactured in the Oyonnax region (FR), mainly by hand and with some of the oldest machines still operating today. Every component, down to the smallest detail, is deadstock - except for the lenses.

FRONTS - The manufacturer of the fronts remains unattributed; made from 8mm (80/10) acetate slabs, we found unfinished and raw, left mid-manufacturing process. Only the first pass and some structural details were done. Based on material, colours and shapes, we estimate them date back to the 1970s.

TEMPLES - We found matching deadstock raw temples for the col.052 (demi-blond) and col.053 (demi-amber). Other colours were produced from deadstock acetate slabs, with 4mm monel wirecore supplied by Carrier (Bellignat, FR).

HINGES - The fronts were assembled with 53-6° hinges from Société Veuve Henri Chevassus (Morez, FR), and the temples with 521 00 03 from Comotec (Morez, FR).

SCREWS - The final hero holding it all together: a 2.8x61 screw, from Morez (FR).

Available as optical and sunglasses, in 9 combinations of colours and sizes.
