Yesterday, .mlnn presented his graduation show at Institut Français de la Mode / ifmfashionba , a truly special collection that we were so honoured to be able to help bring to its final form.

The collection moves between inherited identity and the self we imagine for ourselves growing up. Drawing on personal memories, family garments and worn domestic fabrics to build a language of intimacy passed down through generations. Into that familiar world creeps a nocturnal imaginary, a world of desire and transformation inspired by cinema and literature, where the night offers the space to become someone else. The collection moves between sleepwear and tailoring, childhood and adulthood, embracing imbalance through oversized volumes, aged fabrics and instinctive styling choices. Clothing becomes both memory and a disguise; identities that stay fluid and unsettled, where no dress code is truly respected, and eyewear is part of that.

We were able to help Paul in this last step, re-working protective masks for athletes into an eyewear accessory, replacing their usual elastic straps with temples from our back stock - Robert Morel (Jura, FR) for the transparent ones and an unknown stock from Morez (Jura, FR) for the black ones. These were assembled with 180° hinges and triple rivets, allowing the curve to follow the mask naturally. With some trial and error, a lot of filing and some determination, it all came together into a hybrid born of glasses and masks.

A big congratulations to Paul on his final collection! We’re on the edge of our seats to see what he does next.

Bausch & Lomb Ray-Ban Laramie sunglasses.

We rarely focus on brands in the shop. This is simply because when luxury brands started to license their names to manufacturers to put on frames, there was a significant drop in quality; value became attached to logos and advertising rather than to the craftsmanship itself.

With a B&L Ray-Ban though, you can trust it’s made with the calibre that built the brand’s name.

Hard to imagine these will be on the wall for long, pass by Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30 to 18.30.

Clara (2000, Le Mans) doesn’t need much of an introduction at Bidules. If you’ve been at the shop, or have been following us for long enough, chances are you’ve already crossed paths with Clara. She’s a true force of nature, and always has a trick up her sleeve to blow our minds away.

Besides helping you find your new best frame - and friend, she’s also (mainly) an eyewear and accessory designer. Her portfolio is vast and impressive, from being finalist of the Grand Prix of the International Festival of Hyères with a collection she created from discarded Bidules frames to the Hermès fashion accessory prize, and to designing pieces for renowned artists and fashion designers. The list is very long - in fairness we did warn you, she never stops.

One thing you might not know about Clara is her big passion for puzzles. It’s not an amateur hobby, and it’s a big part of her and her family’s life. Imagine puzzle marathons, puzzle sprints, basically any Olympic sport puzzle-ified. No wonder that on her days offs, she mostly winds down by clearing a spot on her floor and doing a new puzzle.

She first came to Bidules when she was doing her master’s in accessory design at La Cambre, which was gradually pulling her toward eyewear. She ended up doing a selection for fun, thinking she didn’t actually need glasses (reminder to get your eyes tested!). After figuring out that she does, indeed, need glasses and trying on many frames over the years at the shop, she’s now ended up with a Christian Roth mod.14210 (00s, JP) - marrying her love for both clear and pilot frames.

After nearly two years at Bidules, Clara is moving on to her next chapter - and knowing her, it’ll be just as impressive as everything that came before it. She’s leaving the shop with a true legacy, and we’ll miss her more than we can put into words - but we’re truly just as excited to see what she does next!

NEW FRONT MOD.20

FRONTs are frames made in our workshop (if you ever hear some filing or polishing sounds, chances are a new one is being worked on). They are made entirely from reassembled spare and unfinished parts, including antique fronts, which is how they got their name.

In this specific model, the demi-amber front comes from the 1940s-50s - we found it in Oyonnax (FR) amongst many more unfinished pieces and archives, leading us to believe they were made in the region. This one is made of celluloid, a predecessor to acetate. It was the one of the first synthetic plastic, and is extremely dense which allows you to craft incredibly thin, lightweight frames. It’s not used as much anymore because the material is quite flammable, but thankfully this isn’t really an issue unless you’re manufacturing or storing thousands of them in your basement (no need to worry about us).

As you can tell, the temples came from a different stock altogether, assembled with an ergonomic curve at the hinge, allowing this front (size 44/22) to sit comfortably on a slightly larger head.

The feeling of a new FRONT hitting the store truly never gets old!

For our next EYES portrait, meet Thuan (1990, Brussels), the co-creator of .bxl , a neighbourhood bistro centred around saké. This isn’t the first bistro he’s started in Brussels, always finding new ways to create spaces where people can gather around a table.

A lot of people still confuse saké for a spirit but it isn’t, as Thuan told us: “it’s a brewed rice wine, closer in nature to a fine wine than to a shot of vodka. It has complexity, seasonality, and a vocabulary as rich as any wine tradition - shaped by the quality of the rice, the water source, and the skill of the brewer. Serve it cold or hot, in a proper glass, with food that has nothing to do with Japan - it pairs beautifully with cheese, charcuterie, even Brussels classics.” Definitely made all of us want to pay a visit.

As if having a restaurant wasn’t enough, Thuan is also developing a video game called ‘Hibiki no Ikigai’ as a tribute to his late dog, Hibiki. The game follows a young dog wandering through a spiritual forest in search of his reason for being - his ikigai. It’s still in progress, but has already pulled at our heartstrings.

In his portrait, he wears a pair of Christian Roth mod.14037 (00s, JP). They’re his first pair of glasses, which are just “enough to make the world a little sharper”. Not bad for a first try.

Boxes from the new stock we received from Cadore (70s, 80s IT) a few weeks ago.

The moment we opened this stock would’ve been a great clip to re-play, as our faces lit up like kids at Christmas from all these beautiful (albeit dusty) boxes.

Here’s a selection of our favourite ones, and their contents are just as radiant.

What happens in Jura… doesn’t stay in Jura.

Some stills from our digging trip earlier this month, passing through familiar and unfamiliar roads, looking (and finding!) lots of new frames to bring back to you in Brussels.

We also spent a good amount of time side-questing to find components and materials for our new FRONTs mod.468. We got lucky and found a set of hinges made in Morez (FR) by Comotec / Société V***e Henri Chevassus and deadstock acetate wire core for the temples. Pretty exciting stuff, we can’t wait for you to see them in their final form.

Some frames don’t need much of an introduction.

Here are two unique, and quite dramatic (in the best way), cat-eye frames, most likely from the 1950s or early 1960s and made in Oyonnax (FR), when the cat-eye silhouette was at its peak.

Terribly solid, but still elegant, with double star-shaped rivets at the outer corners of each brow.

Both available as opticals or sunnies in the shop, pass by to try them out (and your cat-eye personality), anytime Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30 to 18.30.
