Looks like we’re losing some followers today...

The US delegation just discarded all gifts received in Beijing before flying home.

The reason? Security risks and absolute zero trust in Chinese manufacturing.

But what does this have to do with watchmaking?

The irony is that while national security raises red flags, the vast majority of brands and watches sold today under the coveted “Swiss Made” label have already surrendered.

To inflate profit margins, they hide Chinese components and movements inside their cases, sacrificing the historical essence and reliability of watchmaking.

At Dan Henry, we don’t cut corners.

Our pieces are equipped with robust, proven Japanese mechanisms from Seiko and Citizen.

The only “Chinese” movement we use? The Ronda, which the industry itself sells to you as “Swiss.”

The brutal truth is simple: our watches are less Chinese than your Swiss ones.

It’s my way or the highway. 😎

Preventive maintenance for watches?

I think it’s mostly nonsense — an idea invented by the watch industry and happily repeated by watchmakers to keep the service machine running.

Personally, I’d rather fix a watch when it actually breaks than pay for unnecessary “preventive” servicing every few years.

With our watches, we usually replace the entire movement instead of wasting time and money on a full overhaul.

Minor repairs may be done on used movements, but in most cases labor costs at our service centers in Europe and the USA make it faster, cheaper, and far more logical to simply install a brand-new movement. And frankly, I don’t believe preventive maintenance makes much sense for the Japanese calibers we use.

Our Dan Henry watches use Japanese Miyota and Seiko movements.

Only the ladies 1900 model uses a Ronda movement stamped “Swiss Made” — one of the biggest marketing fairy tales in modern watchmaking.

A huge percentage of so-called Swiss movements and components are made in China anyway, just like much of the modern Swiss watch industry itself.

So ironically, my watches are often less Chinese than many “Swiss” watches proudly carrying that label.

That’s the absurd part nobody in the industry likes to talk about.
