Left wrist or right? There's an old answer, and most of us guess it backwards.

The old rule says your left wrist receives and your right wrist sends out. So whatever you want to draw in goes on the left. Whatever you want to put out into the world, or keep out of your day, goes on the right.

Which is why the stack in the first photo is split the way it is.

Rose quartz on the left, for letting love in. Including the kind you're terrible at giving yourself.
Moonstone on the left, for the new chapter you haven't told anyone about yet.
Black tourmaline on the right, for walking out the door with your boundaries already on.

$28, $35 and $35. And buy any two stack bracelets, the third one's free. Swipe for a few more ways to wear each side.

The part nobody tells you: there's no wrong wrist. Your first instinct in the morning is usually right, and I'd trust it over any rulebook, including mine.

The whole guide, wrist by wrist, is in the comments πŸ‘‡

So which one do you reach for first without thinking: left or right?

Who's the October birthday you're shopping for? She gets two stones, and neither of them can pick one colour.

Opal is the famous one. I don't carry genuine opal (the guide explains why). What I make instead is opalite: glass that flashes blue, then peach, then a colour nobody has named yet. It's a mood ring that went to finishing school. The teardrop is made by hand at my bench in Calgary. $45

Pink tourmaline is the other one, and it's the real thing. Faceted pink on a gold dangle, $95. Or the pink tourmaline and pearl chain, $255, for the woman who has earned a necklace this year.

Each tourmaline piece is the last one on the shelf. When they go, they go.

Guide's in the comments πŸ‘‡

Opalite or pink tourmaline: which one is she?

Calgary's O SCANada checked whether I'm really Canadian. I passed. Cathy and her son Ryan built the app, and they got every word right.

It checks whether a brand is really Canadian. You scan a barcode or type in a name, and it tells you who owns the company, where the work happens and what it's made from. I sent in my details a while ago and forgot about it. Then Cathy's email arrived: I'm in.

So I searched myself. (Everyone does it. Don't pretend you haven't.)

Canadian owned and operated since 2008. Designed and assembled by me, in Calgary. Components sourced from around the world: gemstones, glass, fair-trade Nepali beads, sterling silver.

That last part matters to me. "Canadian owned," "designed and assembled in Canada" and "Made in Canada" are three different promises. I'm the first two. I've never claimed the third, and I'd rather tell you plainly than let a maple leaf do the talking.

The last three photos are three made-in-Calgary pieces nobody else will ever own, made by hand by my friend Kelly: an etched agate dzi-style necklace with onyx and brass, dzi bead drop earrings with pyrite and hematite, and an onyx and moonstone bracelet. One of each. When they're gone, they're gone.

Thank you, Cathy and Ryan, for building something that asks the honest question.

Do you check where things are made before you buy? πŸ‘‡

If you could spin one word back to yourself every morning, what would it be?

That's the question a prayer wheel asks. It turns, and the turning is the practice. You aren't asking it to fix anything. You're giving your hands a job while your head catches up, which is more useful than it sounds at 6am in a hospital parking lot.

I carry it three ways: a necklace, a pair of earrings, and a ring. The ring sits right where your thumb finds it, which is exactly where you want it on a long day.

The spinning necklaces open, and they arrive empty. What goes inside is nobody's business but yours. In my experience it's nearly always one of three things: a name, a word, or a date.

There's also a right direction to turn one, and most people guess wrong. That part's in the comments.

So: a name, a word, or a date. Which would yours be?

Nobody picks the owl on a good week.

I've been watching which spirit animal women land on for years now, and there's a pattern I didn't expect. It isn't aspirational. Almost nobody picks the one they'd like to be.

The owl turns up for the woman circling a decision she already knows the answer to. She's been circling it since spring. She doesn't need more information. She needs to stop pretending she doesn't have it.

The hummingbird turns up for the opposite woman. The one who makes it all look effortless, running at eighty wingbeats a second underneath, and hasn't sat down since Thursday.

Two completely different weeks. Both of them showed up in my inbox this month.

What I've noticed is that the recognition comes first and the reasoning comes after. Women read the description and go "well, that's uncomfortable," and that's usually the right one.

The quiz is in the comments πŸ‘‡

So: owl or hummingbird? Honest, not aspirational.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and two dogs in this house would like a word. (Sound on. That noise is Boo, working her puzzle toy at 12.)

Boo came up from California, pulled out of a high-kill shelter. At vetting they got a surprise. She was pregnant. Six puppies. My family raised golden retrievers for years and I love a puppy as much as anyone, but I wanted an adult. So I told the kids to stay focused on Boo while I beelined for the puppies. Boo was ours.

For days I kept hearing a strange slapping noise. It took me an embarrassingly long time to work out it was her, still full from six puppies. Her first night she climbed onto one of the kids' beds and let out the biggest sigh. She's 12 now. Our walks are slower.

Willow came home for a one-week trial before her adoption was final. She never left. She's the reason I went on to foster three more dogs. I'd foster a fourth, but Boo has filed a formal objection.

Last Saturday I asked what your dog arrived with that you never fixed. Boo's: every night she picks who she's sleeping with, and there's no appeal process. Willow's is a longer story, so it's in the comments.

What's your dog's name, and who rescued who?

I didn't pitch them. I didn't pay them. A US occult marketplace just named Mystic Soul Jewelry the #1 occult jewelry shop of 2026.

I found out the way you find most good things: by accident, at 3 a.m., while looking for something else. (I was combing through every website that links to my shop. This is what running a small business looks like at 3 a.m.)

GothMarket's Top Occult Jewelry Shops for 2026. Five shops. Mine is first.

Their reason: "the pick for buyers who want something no one else owns."

I read that twice, because it's the part I care about most. My one-of-a-kind pieces are designed and assembled one at a time in my Calgary studio, from stones and components I've been collecting for eighteen years. When one sells, it's gone. No restock, no second batch.

A new one-of-a-kind drop goes out every two weeks. My Coven sees it first, the Inner Circle two days later, and whatever's left lands in the shop.

I don't know who wrote it. So, GothMarket, if you're reading: thank you. You made a jewelry maker in Calgary very happy this week.

What do you give someone who's had a hard year?

Not a bad week. A year. The one where her name came up in every "have you heard" conversation, and she stopped answering the group chat because she was tired of saying she was fine.

Flowers are lovely for four days. Casseroles are lovely, and then there's a dish to return. A card says the right thing once.

What people tell me at my table, over and over, is that they want to give her something she'll still have on in March. Something that doesn't ask how she's doing every time she looks at it. It just stays.

So I'll ask you what I ask them. Who are you thinking of right now, and what has she already been given that didn't help?

Check which wrist you're wearing it on. I'll wait.

There's an old idea that the left wrist is the receiving side and the right is the giving side. Left takes in β€” protection, calm, whatever you're short on. Right sends out β€” what you're putting into the room.

I didn't believe a word of it for years. Then I noticed I'd been putting the same bracelet on the same wrist every single morning without deciding to, and when I tried it on the other side it felt wrong in a way I couldn't argue with.

That's the thing about these old rules. You don't have to believe them for your hands to already be following them.

So go on. Look down. Which wrist, and did you know you'd chosen?

The full left-versus-right breakdown is in the comments πŸ‘‡
