Scam Awareness: Jewellery Distraction Thefts
The Fredericton Police Force has received several reports of suspects approaching people in parking lots and other public places with stories about needing money, travelling out of province, helping family members, selling jewellery, or giving away valuable items.
In many cases, suspects offer a ring, chain or other jewellery item and encourage the person to try it on or inspect it. While the victim is distracted, suspects may remove and steal a necklace, wallet, purse, cellphone or other valuables without them realizing it. In some incidents, victims later discovered the jewellery provided by the suspects was fake.
Protect yourself: Be cautious of unsolicited approaches from strangers.
✅ Do not allow anyone to place jewellery or other items on you.
✅ Keep wallets, purses and valuables secure and out of sight.
✅ End the interaction and leave if something feels suspicious.
✅ If safe to do so, note suspect and vehicle descriptions.
What can you do if you've been targeted?
• Report the incident to police immediately
• Contact your financial institution if your wallet, cards or banking information may have been compromised.
• Report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
Scammers often rely on distraction, surprise and emotional manipulation to gain your trust. Staying aware of your surroundings and maintaining your personal space can help prevent you from becoming a victim.
