“What an awesome shop” since 1986 The Black Market Boutique has been a Halifax institution for 35 years! Walking into our shop is an experience just on it's own!

It has the feel of stepping into another world, as each year, we travel directly to and hand pick our goods from India, Nepal, Bali, Thailand, and occasionally Turkey, Peru, Ecuador & Mexico. Traveling ourselves to do our purchasing not only helps us maintain very fair prices for you! It also insures a level of quality you can't get through ordering from a catalog or online. We take care to buy beautiful, handmade, quality things from people we trust, where we can often see how and where things are being made, and more importantly, who is making them. We care a great deal about people, and community, and our shop supports over 20 families directly in these countries, on top of the family businesses we buy from, as well as a dozen or so organizations both locally and globally. If you're wondering what you might find in our shop, here are just some of the things we stock regularly:
An abundance of fun jewelry, including sterling silver, semi precious stone, brass, wood and beaded. Fantastic accessories like clutches, purses, wallets and backpacks. Clothing, classic & stylish dresses, tops & pants in the spring and summer, to scarves, shawls and jackets in the fall, to wool sweaters, socks, hats, mitts and booties in the winter. We also have a huge selection of natural incense, and a lovely array of home decor, such as duvet covers, cushions in various shapes and sizes, tapestries, bedspreads, table cloths, mirrors, masks and wood carved boxes, Buddhas, animals and various figures. As well as a very fun selection of hand painted and hand felted kids toys and mobiles. We even have the sweetest Christmas ornaments around come the Holiday season! We will be closed on September 30th for Orange Shirt Day & National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. and re open on Treaty Day where we will donate 10% of our sales to local mutual aids for Mi'kmaq and Indigenous people.

Many people have a day off, which is time that can be used to amplify, listen, and learn from Indigenous people. Every Child Matters. This day is to honour, remember, and uplift the stories of the stolen children who never returned home, survivors, and all Indigenous people who were and are impacted by the residential school system in canada and the harmful ongoing impacts, including the 60's scoop and the disproportionate harms of the foster care system on Indigenous youth.

For people who are settlers, including us, we have to make sure that the truth is never buried, to never allow residential school denialism around us, and learn about how we can support all the 94 calls to action from The Truth and Reconciliation Commission. These are year round calls to action. Genocide has never ended here on Turtle Island.

Tomorrow in our stories we will be sharing resources to learn from like documentaries, reports, videos, and writings, along with local mutual aids. Colonialism has never ended here on Turtle Island, and as Treaty people we all have a role in building a more just future, one way we can do that is redistribute our money to Mi'kmaq and Indigenous people who have open mutual aid requests. 🧡
