Guys I’m gonna be honest I am WIPED. Everything has caught up to me and I’m tired lol I’m at McMaster tomorrow in MUSC 9 ish to 5 (may be late) and then I’ll try and chill for a few days - but I am squeezing in some Halloween goodies like this quilted bat pocket tote! I was 9 when a boy in class kept making fun of me for dressing like a boy. I told him he looked like a dog and he threw his chair AT my face. I got sent to the principals office and he didn’t.
When I found out I was pregnant there was a running joke amongst my friends that I couldn’t have a boy because I despised men. It was funny until it wasn’t. I was terrified to be the mom of a boy, who would be a man. I had pent up anger, rage at the world and the way men went through it. I had experienced enough in school, at work, in college to understand the hierarchy of punishment was askew. The imbalance of power was everywhere. It was on the train, it was at the coffee shop, it was in our homes and our local government. I was full of fear knowing what was to come. I was told “boys were easier” but are they? Or do we let them off easier on things that women would be punished for. Are they easier or do they get to write apologies while we lose privileges.
It’s my duty to raise a man who rages alongside women. It’s our duty to raise men who statistically don’t follow a crowd simply to avoid being made fun of or standing out. It’s our jobs as mothers to rewrite history in a way that seems incomprehensible. I’ll encourage daily the softness a young boy brings to his family. Tears when he hurts me, a soft cradle of a baby doll, a hug and kiss when I’m missed. From the strangers view it looks like a classic traditional stay at home mom out with her son but inside is a daily lesson on changing the stats, changing the norm, and never letting men continue to get away with it.

The second trinkets bag went much smoother!! This is my mountains themed tote with major inspiration from ashleywilliamslondon & Cams current favourite book : I spy. I’ll for sure be making more but for now you can grab this one this weekend at Toronto Vintage Show (made from vintage gingham fabric and deadstock denim) or online next week if still available!
