Before rail activity could return to Abitibi Connex, the infrastructure had to be ready.

The rehabilitation of the existing tracks was a critical first step, made possible through a coordinated effort between the Town of Iroquois Falls, Ontario Northland (ONR), and BMI, supported by a $4 million investment from the ONR.

This is what progress looks like: working together and getting it done.
Thank you to the Town of Iroquois Falls and Mayor Tory Delaurier for their continued support.

This is what connection looks (and sounds!) like. 🚂

Every train moving through Abitibi Connex is visible proof that the infrastructure here is active and working.

With rail access, transloading, warehousing and room to support large-scale operations, the site helps move the materials behind construction, mining, infrastructure and other projects across Northern Ontario.

For the community, it’s a familiar sound with new significance: freight moving, activity returning and new opportunities arriving at the site.

What exactly is transloading?

It’s the process of transferring freight from one mode of transportation to another, helping materials continue their journey by rail, truck, or a combination of both.

Here at Abitibi Connex, it looks a little like this.

For businesses moving large, heavy, or specialized shipments through Northern Ontario, transloading creates more flexibility in how materials reach their destination. Combined with on-site rail access, storage and laydown space, it’s one of the ways Abitibi Connex can support the complex logistics behind construction, mining, infrastructure and other major projects across the region.

It may be one step in the journey, but it’s an important one.

For more than a decade, improving food security in Northern Ontario has been a priority for BMI. This year, that vision is taking root.

At Abitibi Connex in Iroquois Falls, in the heart of the Great Canadian Clay Belt, we've been developing an agriculture program to explore the region's potential to support locally grown food.

This growing season, we've planted our first crops of potatoes and oats.

Despite its agricultural potential, just 1.4% of Ontario's Clay Belt is currently under cultivation. At the same time, the average price of farmland in Southern Ontario has significantly increased. As farmland becomes increasingly scarce and expensive, Northern Ontario represents an opportunity that deserves renewed attention.

We believe responsible agricultural development in the North can strengthen local economies, improve regional food security, and create new opportunities for communities across the region.

We're excited to demonstrate what's possible and share our progress as our first season unfolds.

Abitibi Connex has been a busy landing pad lately for a helicopter bringing trees and tree-planters heading North. We got the chance to join a flight and see over 100 acres of Abitibi Farms being prepared and planted from the air. 2026 marks our first official season! Thanks to Mayor Tory Delaurier for coming along to see the progress.
