Madagascar is one of the most fascinating chapters in modern sapphire history.

Although its corundum deposits were documented as early as the 19th century, the island's true gemological revolution began in the 1990s.

The discovery of vast sapphire deposits near Ilakaka in 1998 transformed a quiet village into an international gemstone trading centre almost overnight.

What collectors find particularly intriguing is the remarkable diversity of Madagascar's sapphires.

The southern deposits of Andranondambo have produced exceptional blues reminiscent of Kashmir, while the 2016 discovery at Bemainty yielded extraordinary velvety blue and rare padparadscha sapphires, some initially mistaken for stones of more prestigious origins.

The irony is that Madagascar produces sapphires capable of rivaling some of the world's most celebrated gems, yet its name still lacks the romantic prestige of Kashmir, Burma or Ceylon.

For knowledgeable collectors, that relative obscurity is part of its appeal.
