THE ETERNAL LIGHTNESS OF STILL LIFE
2026, Brass, garnets and glass.
Three brass sculptures rise on slender limbs, appearing to float in space. Shaped by curves and textures that evoke imperfect botanical formsâat times petals, at times protective thornsâthese hybrid creatures seem to awaken slowly, as if suspended in a lingering existence. At once still and in motion, suspended glass droplets suggest the sway of pendulums or the exhalations of a living soul.
Each piece is also set with small nuggets of irregularly shaped garnetâa stone whose name means âseedâ or âfruit,â and which has been used in jewelry since Antiquity for its symbolism of fertility and protection. Like tiny living organisms ready to hatch at any moment, these red garnets also introduce an ornamental dimension that alludes to the richness of these jewel-objects.
Like a contemporary memento mori, these precious sculptures evoke beauty and vanity while reminding us of the inevitability of death. This triptych explores themes of the cycle of nature and the paradox of existence. Both ephemeral and perpetually regenerative, itâs the idea of eternal transience so dear to Renaissance thought, which suggests a meditation on becoming.
Brass, in contrast, endures. A nearly indestructible material, it will withstand time like a relic from an ancient era, retaining within its form the memory of my fingers imprinted during its making. The eternity of the creator, one might believe.
