Some 1962 pennies have tiny lines running from the 1 in “1 CENT” down to the maple leaf. Collectors call this the GUITAR variety! 🔍

🇨🇦 NOT RARE… BUT DEFINITELY WORTH KEEPING! 🪙👀

The 1967 Bobcat quarter commemorated Canada’s 100th anniversary of Confederation—and it may be worth much more than 25 cents.

Nearly 49 million were minted, but some were made with 80% silver, while others contain 50% silver. That means the silver content alone can be worth far more than face value! 💰

Check your collection, old coin jars, and inherited change. You might have one hiding there.

SOMETHING LOOKS OFF WITH THIS 1981 PENNY! 👀🪙

Look at the uneven border and that raised lip around part of the coin.

It was described as an off-centre strike, but I’m keeping the identification tentative. The photos show something unusual, but we need a clearer look at the actual edge before drawing conclusions.

🪙 MINT ERROR OR POST-MINT DAMAGE?

One of the hardest things for newer collectors is figuring out whether a strange-looking coin is a real Mint error… or just damage that happened after it left the Mint.

A few quick clues:

REAL MINT ERRORS usually come from something going wrong during production, like:
• Off-centre strikes
• Rotated dies
• Wrong planchets
• Misaligned dies
• Shifted or missing centres on bimetallic coins

PMD — Post-Mint Damage happens afterward and can include:
• Scratches or gouges
• Grinding or filing
• Heat damage
• Chemical damage
• Plating
• Bent coins
• Drilled or punched holes

A good rule of thumb is to look closely at the metal around the unusual area.

If the metal looks torn, scraped, pushed around or unnaturally flattened, damage is more likely.

If the feature looks like it was created as part of the strike, then it may be worth investigating further.

Also check the coin’s weight, diameter, magnetism, and compare it with a normal example.

And most importantly:

Don’t clean it. Don’t file it. Don’t “test” it by damaging it.

DON’T CLEAN YOUR COINS 🪙🚫

One of the easiest ways to accidentally hurt the value of a collectible coin is trying to make it look “better.”

Polishing, toothpaste, vinegar, baking soda, metal cleaner, erasers and even rubbing with a cloth can leave tiny scratches or permanently alter the original surface.

Collectors usually prefer original surfaces, even when a coin has natural toning or looks a little dirty.

A shiny coin is not necessarily a better coin, and cleaning will never improve its grade. In fact, a valuable coin may receive a “Details – Cleaned” designation instead of a normal numerical grade if the cleaning is obvious.

So if you find an old or unusual coin:

Identify it. Research it. Protect it. Don’t clean it.

The 1953 Canadian nickel might look like an ordinary 5-cent coin, but did you know there are FOUR different varieties? 👀

And TWO of them can be worth serious money!

🔥 Shoulder Fold FAR: Up to $6,500
🔥 No Shoulder Fold NEAR: Up to $7,200

Those are guide values for MS-65 examples, but even worn examples of these scarce varieties can be worth much more than face value!

This was the coin that made me realize something… sometimes five cents isn’t just five cents! 💰
