Something local, made especially for Adora Diamonds. 💙

We discovered beautiful handmade 3D maps this summer and we knew immediately what we wanted to see: Jackfish and Murray Lakes.

They're handmade in Canada from layers of coloured cardstock, with each layer showing a different water depth. The detail up close is very cool.

We had a small first run made especially for our store in an 8x10 size, so they'll fit perfectly in an 8x10 frame or a matted 11x14 frame.

Turns out gemology isn’t always conducted under perfect lighting with a microscope- sometimes it means getting your hands dirty.

Ryan recently had the chance to travel and do a little sapphire mining. When you hear “sapphire mining,” you might picture tunnels, drills, and sapphires being chipped out of solid rock.

In most of the world’s sapphire deposits, the experience can look quite different.

These sapphires were recovered from alluvial gravel deposits — material moved and deposited by erosion and water over time. He worked the gravel using a jig to concentrate the heavier material, learned the process, and experienced firsthand where these beautiful stones begin their journey.

And yes, that handful really is full of sapphires he found myself. He was able to find sapphires of many beautiful colours: blue, green, orange, and even pink!

A few of the more promising ones are headed off for treatment and cutting. With a little luck, one or two might eventually make their way from those gravel beds all the way into our showcase.

This weekend, we will celebrate the life of our dear friend and coworker, Thelma Van Der Haegen, alongside her family and friends. We are grateful for the time we shared with her and for the kindness, warmth, and friendship she brought to our lives. She will be deeply missed by all of us.
