A tidy little chunk of Habsburg small change: a 3 Kreuzer of Emperor Leopold I, the long-reigning ruler behind some of the most iconic late 17th century Central European history.

You get Leopold’s portrait and name on one side, and a dense wall of titles on the other with ARCHID AVST for Archduke of Austria. These were everyday spenders in the Habsburg world, and they are a great “entry point” denomination if you like the Holy Roman Empire era without needing crown-sized budgets.

A classic piece of Dutch trade-coin history: a 1752 VOC duit, struck for the Dutch East India Company. The bold VOC monogram was meant to be instantly recognizable in circulation, especially across the huge web of company outposts and trade routes.

In North America these turn up constantly and are often nicknamed “New York pennies”, since they circulated widely in colonial-era trade and day to day transactions. Flip it over and you get the Zeeland arms, with the lion rising over stylized waves, a perfect little reminder that this was maritime money for a maritime empire.

A great early Canadian piece just came through the shop: a Lesslie & Sons Upper Canada halfpenny token, issued during the early 1800s when small change was in short supply.

Lesslie & Sons was a real Upper Canada family firm that operated three branches under the same name, with stores in York, Kingston, and Dundas. These tokens helped fill the day to day need for local change when official coinage was scarce.

One side shows Justice with scales and sword and names the firm and towns. The other side features a plough and the bilingual mottos “Prosperity to Canada” and “La Prudence et la Candeur.”

A neat snapshot of pre Confederation commerce, when Canadian everyday money was often whatever the community could actually use.

A great piece of Edwardian silver in hand: a 1904 Great Britain Florin, also known as the Two Shillings or 24 pence piece.

This coin comes from the short reign of King Edward VII, which makes the type a tight window in British pre decimal coinage. The reverse features Britannia standing with trident and shield, with the denomination spelled out as ONE FLORIN TWO SHILLINGS, a classic design that feels very “Empire era” in the best way.

Struck in sterling silver (.925), this is a strong old money type coin with real presence and a better date within the Edward VII run.

Fresh historical silver in the case: a 1781 Austrian 20 Kreuzer of Joseph II.

This piece was struck under Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II, with the B mintmark for Kremnica, one of the major Habsburg mints. The denomination is 20 Kreuzer, equal to one third of a gulden, and it carries that classic late 18th century imperial look with Joseph’s portrait on one side and the double headed eagle on the other.

A great example of everyday silver coinage from the Habsburg world, and a really strong piece for anyone who likes European crown era history.

Fresh world silver in hand: a 1930 British Trade Dollar, one of the great commerce coins of the British Empire.

These were struck specifically for circulation in Asia, where silver trade dollars were widely used in everyday commerce and international trade. That is what makes this type so interesting. It was not just a commemorative or presentation piece, it was a working coin made to move through real markets across the East.

The design features Britannia standing with trident and shield on one side, while the reverse carries the denomination in multiple scripts for use in Asian trade, including Chinese characters and Jawi (Malay in Arabic script). It is a great example of how coinage was adapted for regional circulation and cross cultural commerce.

A sharp historical piece with a strong silver presence and a story that goes far beyond Britain itself.

A beautiful world silver type just came through the shop: Persia (Iran) 5000 Dinars, 1902, a noted one year type under Mozaffar al-Din Shah.

The reverse features the iconic Lion and Sun emblem with the lion holding a sword and the sun rising behind, framed by a wreath. The other side carries Persian inscriptions within a crowned wreath, classic Qajar era style.

Big, bold, and high silver content, this is the kind of coin that looks even better in hand than it does in photos.

A sharp Canadian commemorative sterling silver medallion celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s first 25 years on the throne (1952 to 1977).

One side features the Queen with the bilingual legend “God Save the Queen / Dieu protège la Reine”, the ER monogram, and 25 YEARS / ANS. Flip it over and you get a great snapshot of modern Canadian history, listing the Governors General of Canada (1952 to 1977) with portraits and terms, from Vincent Massey through Jules Léger.

Not a circulating coin, but a premium silver issue with a clean, display worthy design and a neat historical roster all in one piece.

A cool trench art piece from the King George V era British coin that’s been smoothed, engraved, and drilled to be worn, marked “Lieut. A.J. Mills, R.N.Z.N.V.R.” (Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve).

Instead of being kept as a collectible coin, it was repurposed into a practical identification piece, likely worn on a cord or chain. The drilled hole at 12 o’clock and the clean, flattened field on the reverse are exactly what you look for when a coin has been converted for daily use.

Coins like this sit in that sweet spot between numismatics and service history. Less about grade, more about the story.
