This is great advice. I’d go one step further though because if there’s room for mulch, then there’s room for plants.

Ground covers provide the same benefits as mulch, but they're waaay more effective at preventing weeds. Instead of just blocking the sun, ground covers create root mats that occupy the space where weeds would normally grow.

Simple, but stunning.

If you're planning on a plant shopping spree this weekend, and go check out Gaia Organic Seeds. Their seeds make up half my collection, and their chocolate striped tomato keeps me happy all summer.

I have a great love for plants that resemble something else in nature. Meet the sea anemone's doppelganger, the Passionflower.

Passionflower is a hardy vine that looks tropical but can withstand colder climates. It’s said to grow in zones 5-9, but if you live in zone 5 grow it in a container, and bring it indoors for the winter. It loves full sun, but tolerates partial shade (4 hours of light). Provide it with regular water, an all-purpose fertilizer, and you’ll have a happy plant. Passionflowers bloom on new growth, which means you only prune it in the spring before it flowers.

Attention growers! We have compiled a list of local organic seeds and seedlings producers!

To ensure garden success, find seeds and seedlings that are adapted to this region, either through a fellow gardener, farmer, or organic seed supplier. Organic seeds are non-GMO and untreated, and they were grown under Certified Organic conditions.

Lovage (Levisticum officialis) is my plant pick of the week! Low maintenance, hardy, and edible, lovage is a must-have for lovers of soups and stews. Think celery meets parsley with a pinch of citrus.

Lovage is deep-rooting perennial with a clumping growth pattern. When left uncut it will produce bright yellow umbels (clusters of tiny flowers that grow in an umbrella-like shape).

Common instructions say to plant it in full or partial sun where it can grow to be 6 feet tall. However, most people don't need 6 feet of lovage. Also, it looks messy. I suggest growing lovage in part shade. Mine gets 3 hours of sun per day, and it's 3 feet tall.
