🪹 Out of the nest aGAIN this past weekend ~ and festing once again… this time at COOKIEFEST!!! It was the 2nd year for this event held in London, Ontario ~ but my first time attending anything like this.

Cookiefest was a celebration of all things cookies ~ and decorating them has become an art form! So… mixing, rolling, cutting, baking, colouring, flavouring, and decorating cookies. There are so many techniques and products used; like gel colour for Royal icing, airbrushing, stencilling, marbling, embossing, dipping and even printing with edible ink on an Eddie printer!!

So so many things you never knew could be done to elevate cookies. This industry has EXPLODED in the last 10 years and Covid had a hand in that. People couldn’t go anywhere and were spending a lot-t-t of time in their kitchens. It was almost the end of button pants! 😂😂😂

I never imagined being this invested at this point of my cookie journey. There are no aspirations beyond making special cookies for my family, but I am definitely hooked. The videos are so addicting. They’re sped up a LOT and make it look so easy!!

I’ve only done Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter for about 3 years. Also a few for my daughter’s bachelorette and bridal shower, and some for my grandson’s baby shower. With no practice in between, it’s taken awhile to actually see my progress ~ but it’s there!

There is even a name for people that do this, often as a business. They’re called cookiers!! So I guess I’m one now too. 😅

Cookiefest was so fun; the classes and seminars, demos, tips and tricks of the trade, meeting other cookiers, inCREDible swag bags and the SHOPPING!! 😮😮😮🛍️🛍️🛍️

There were people and vendors from all over Canada and the US. It was held in a massive complex that was originally used by Kellogg’s to manufacture cereal! What a blast;
I had a super time. 🤗

We made a quick visit to Lower Milovaig on Skye, where my Great Grandfather Alexander MacDonald was born, in 1862. He emigrated to Canada and died in 1912 ~ in Arnprior, Ontario. I tried to imagine how he felt looking out onto those fields for the last time before he left Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

After Skye, we spent a couple of days in Fort William and Glencoe. Saw the
Jacobite Steam Train cross the 21-arch Glenfinnan Viaduct, but without steam, sadly. It gained worldwide fame as the real-life Hogwarts Express route in the Harry Potter films.

We were a bit sad to leave Skye, but some sticky toffee pudding on the way to Fort William definitely helped. 😋
Also, the 3 Schnauzers at our next place were super cute. 🥰

From there, we saw a turf house at the Glencoe National Nature Reserve. They built it the same way as they were traditionally made for centuries. Turf houses were referred to then as the lost homes of the MacDonald’s of Glencoe.

The historic Sligachan Bridge is one of those beautiful Skye scenes that feels like it belongs in another time. Nearby are the bronze statues of Norman Collie and John MacKenzie, two pioneering mountaineers who explored the Cuillin Mountains in the background. I thought they were beautiful!

I was so excited we were going to the Fairy Pools next… but they weren’t exactly what I was expecting:

… a magical, leisurely stroll to the Fairy Pools.

Reality: An absolute leg-burning mountaineering expedition, and wayyy harder to climb than the internet made it look. [insert Theme from Rocky here] 😮‍💨

Pretty sure the “fairies” were laughing the whole time. 😅 I did get some super photos though!!

Then it was on to the dramatic Quiraing (Cuith-Raing) and Kilt Rock, the 90 metre sea cliff named for its resemblance to the pleats of a traditional Scottish kilt. The changing sunlight and clouds made the landscape even more striking.

It was sooo windy!!! Dave had to hold onto me and block the wind long enough for me to snap these pics.

Next stop were the ruins of Armadale Castle in Sleat, once home to Lord MacDonald.

The surrounding 40 acres of woodland gardens were amazing. They’re sheltered by the Sleat peninsula and because of the warming influence of the Gulf Stream, many exotic plants and trees are able to thrive that would struggle elsewhere in Scotland.

Next on our list was Inverness, and taking the train there was such a great way to travel. 🚆

We visited the Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre and Museum, learning about the historic 1746 battle. It was fascinating to see and learn more about Scottish history ~ and it would be especially interesting for any Outlander fans!

Then it was on to Isle of Skye for six amazing days, with breathtaking scenery everywhere you look!!!

Like Dunvegan Castle (Caisteal Dhùn Bheagain), the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and home to the MacLeod clan for more than 800 years. Hugh Magnus MacLeod, the current clan chief, still spends time there! 🏰

The next day, we visited The Fairy Glen, which was my favourite place!! Formed about 100,000 years ago, it’s a delightful miniature landscape of grassy, cone-shaped hills. What a fascinating and otherworldly spot to visit!✨

One of the most intriguing features is an ancient rock formation that resembles a castle, known as Castle Ewan.

Have you been? Edinburgh is a great place to start ~ especially during the Fringe Festival. It is quite packed with people, but seeing all the street performers is worth it!!!

I can’t post more than one video in a Facebook post, so I screenshot the first 6 images. If you want to actually watch-h-h these videos, (much more fun) just head over to my Instagram page!!
