METROBUS REDUCING SERVICE ON FIVE ROUTES 🚌

Metrobus is scaling back weekday service on five routes beginning October 26 because of staffing shortages.

Routes 9, 11 and 23 will move to hourly service. Routes 14 and 18 will run every 30 minutes only during the morning and afternoon rush.

Weekend schedules will remain unchanged.

Metrobus says shortages of mechanics and transit operators have left it without enough buses and staff to maintain the current service.

NEWFOUNDLAND’S 551-MILLION-YEAR-OLD “COMB BEAST”

A fossil uncovered near Upper Island Cove has given scientists a glimpse of an animal that lived hundreds of millions of years before the dinosaurs.

The fossil is 551 million years old. Memorial University researchers believe it belonged to a distant relative of today’s comb jellies, the delicate ocean creatures that move through the water with shimmering rows of tiny hair-like paddles. The oldest previously known comb-jelly fossils were about 20 million years younger.

The newly named species, Edrathina obditchia, is especially unusual because it was preserved in Newfoundland rock without a shell or bones. Its name combines Beothuk words for “comb” and “beast,” chosen by the researcher who found it as a tribute to the Beothuk people.

The discovery may add a surprising new piece to the debate over what the earliest animals on Earth looked like. And it came from a fossil site in Conception Bay that researchers say still has more secrets to give up.
