🐉 THE MAESHOWE DRAGON | A Celtic Lass at Heart! 🍀

Canadian by birth, but a Celtic Lass at heart — my DNA says so! 💚 And this remarkable pendant speaks to that part of me.

This striking 1970s Brutalist pendant has been in my personal collection for over 25 years. I love its bold, sculptural character and the fact that the Maeshowe (pronounced Maze-ow) Dragon is beautifully depicted on both sides — a wonderful detail that makes this piece all the more special!

🏰 A little history behind the design…

Built approximately 5,000 years ago, Maeshowe is a magnificent Neolithic chambered tomb in Orkney, Scotland. Centuries later, Norse visitors entered the ancient monument and left behind an extraordinary collection of runic inscriptions and carvings, including a stylized creature known today as the Maeshowe Dragon.

🐉 Dragon or wolf-like beast? Its interpretation may vary, but its powerful, mysterious presence endures.

✨ Ancient heritage meets 1970s design

During the 1960s and 1970s, Scottish jewellery designers helped bring Orkney's rich Celtic and Norse heritage into contemporary jewellery. The bold forms, substantial metalwork and tactile, sculptural aesthetic of Brutalist design created pieces with real presence and individuality.

For me, vintage jewellery is about so much more than adornment. It's about history, craftsmanship, symbolism and the stories that connect us to the past.

And as a Canadian Celtic Lass, this dragon has a special place in my heart. 💚

A little piece of ancient Norse-inspired history, captured in 1970s Brutalist design — and treasured in my collection for over a quarter of a century!

A Note of Respect ❤️

I am not Indigenous/Native American and have no Native ancestry. I share this piece as a longtime jewelry collector with a deep love and respect for Indigenous artistry, craftsmanship and cultural traditions. I celebrate its beauty while recognizing that its cultural heritage is not mine to claim.

✨ The Necklace: A three-dimensional, hand-carved mother-of-pearl bird pendant featuring intricate feather etchings, complemented by strands of heishe beads and spacer beads.

The style evokes vintage Southwestern jewelry, including designs associated with Navajo and Zuni traditions, although the precise origin of this particular piece has not been confirmed. If anyone has any further information on my lovely and cherished piece, I would love to hear from you!

✨ 1963 CHRISTIAN DIOR — GERMANY ✨

And this one is an absolute MINT + MUSEUM-CONDITION beauty.

A spectacular vintage Christian Dior brooch, produced in Germany by the renowned Henkel & Grosse of Pforzheim and dated 1963.

The design is pure early-’60s Dior: sculptural gilt metal in a stylized leaf / cornucopia-inspired form, dramatically punctuated with prong-set, faceted glass rhinestones in those gorgeous warm root-beer / smoky topaz tones. The dimensional design is finished with dangling elements and delicate bead-like charms that give the piece wonderful movement.

And the condition? Extraordinary.

I have carefully stored this beauty for almost 30 years in an airtight, velvet, snap-shut jewellery box. It has been protected from light, dust, moisture and the wear and tear that so often takes its toll on vintage costume jewellery.

This is exactly the sort of piece that reminds me why I have been collecting vintage jewellery for decades.

Presenting the reveal from an extraordinary cache of 1950s Czech Bohemian glass bead necklaces—carefully preserved and untouched for decades.

Each necklace you see here is paired with its original box and the very paper it was wrapped and shipped in all those years ago. Some of these have not been opened since the 1950s… a true moment of rediscovery.

Every piece tells a story—not just of craftsmanship, but of time itself. The colours, the finishes, the artistry… all exactly as they were when they first left Czechoslovakia.

✨ LOOK WHAT WE HAVE HERE! ✨

There are vintage pieces you admire… and then there are pieces that stop you in your tracks.

This is one of them.

This spectacular mid-century Dior necklace was produced in Germany in collaboration with Henkel & Grosse, the renowned Pforzheim jewelry manufacturer that began producing exclusive costume jewelry for Christian Dior in 1955.

The design is pure 1960s drama: a gorgeous fan-fringe configuration of stylized, shield-shaped black and grey glass cabochons, highlighted with sparkling clear crystal rhinestones. 🖤✨

And the condition? Exceptional.

Vintage costume jewelry from this era can suffer from foil degradation, flea bites to the stones, or wear to the gold plating. This necklace has escaped all of that. The rhinestones remain pristine and the finish is beautifully preserved.

But here's what makes it especially special to me:

I've owned it since 1991.

I bought it because I loved the design and was completely taken with its pristine condition. Then I carefully tucked it away in an airtight, snap-shut velvet box.

For 35 years.

Never worn.

Until now. 😍

I finally put it on for the first time for these photographs — and then thought, why not? I wore it out for a brief walk to the shops!

It's officially one of my favourite pieces in my collection. 🖤
