Natural or lab-grown? My take 👇🏻

Yes, lab-grown diamonds are diamonds. They have essentially the same crystal structure as natural diamonds. But their origin, growth history and market are different.

Natural diamonds formed in the earth over geological time. Their supply is finite, and their rarity is part of what draws me to them, especially for engagement rings wedding bands, and pieces I hope will become family heirlooms.

Lab-grown diamonds have made a larger look accessible to more people. But production can scale, and their prices have fallen sharply. I believe natural diamonds are more likely to hold value over time. That’s not a promise that a natural diamond will resell for what you paid. But if resale matters to you, you should know that a lab-grown diamond may have little to no meaningful resale value compared with its purchase price.

There’s another part of the conversation customers deserve to know: jewellers’ incentives. At times, retailers have been able to earn a higher percentage margin on lab-grown diamonds. That can give a store a reason to promote them. It doesn’t mean every jeweller recommending one is doing it for that reason… But it’s fair to ask how they’re advising you, and why.

I believe there’s a place for both. Lab-grown can be a great choice if size, style or budget comes first. For a milestone piece with a natural origin and a stronger chance of holding value over time, I personally lean natural.

You deserve the full picture before you decide: what you’re buying, where it came from, how the markets differ, and what it might be worth later.
