Every dollar of revenue must survive a chain before it becomes cash: quote, contract, order, delivery, invoice, collection. Most companies measure the beginning and end, but not conversion between steps. That is where margin quietly disappears.
Non-standard quote terms go untracked. Delivered change orders never reach an invoice. Contract terms, escalators, rebates, and service commitments never flow into billing. Order errors are corrected downstream. Credit memos and disputes become routine customer service instead of signals. Collection time creeps while teams watch booked revenue, not conversion.
The cost: revenue earned but never billed, margin lost to unenforced terms, working capital trapped in disputes and unapplied credits, and forecasts that say “booked” while the bank account says otherwise.
Closing the gap starts with operating discipline, not software. Map the chain and measure quote win rate, order accuracy, billing completeness, and days sales outstanding. Make contract terms legible to billing, not just legal. Count delivered work never invoiced. Treat every credit memo as defect data and find root causes. Give a named owner authority to fix the seams, and review quote-to-cash conversion alongside revenue.
Revenue growth is a strategy question. Revenue capture is an ex*****on question, and usually the cheaper one to improve.
