D originally fell in love with a beautiful Starbrite cut sunstone, but because of its softness it wasn’t the best choice for a daily-wear ring.

When this rare Umba sapphire from John Dyer Gems became available, it felt like the perfect match, a sapphire with the warm glow and character of a sunstone, but with the durability needed for everyday wear.

Starbrite cuts are some of my favourites. They’re a much less common cut, as not every gem-cutter works in this style, and many of these stones are unique, unheated gems in rare colours. If you find one you like, strike while you can or be prepared to wait until another is unearthed. This one is truly special♡
