Stop overheating your sterling silver under the torch 🔥
If your silver sheet is glowing bright cherry red, you aren’t just annealing - you’re pulling copper to the surface and building stubborn firescale.
💡Subdued Studio Light: Always anneal in dim lighting. Daylight washes out early thermal color cues, making you overheat the alloy.
🌸The Salmon Shadow: You are watching for a dull, pale pinkish-gray shadow across the metal (approx 1100oF / 595oC). The second you see it, take the flame away!
🛑The 10-Second Rule: Never quench red-hot silver immediately. Wait 10 seconds for the glow to vanish in ambient air before quenching in water to prevent thermal shock cracks.
