Decades ago, Prof. Albert A. Bühlmann developed circular decompression calculators to make diving safer, translating complex scientific research into practical instruments milions of divers could rely on. Today, that same principle lives on.

The BÜHLMANN DECOMPRESSION 02 takes inspiration directly from these original instruments, mechanically translating the circular decompression scale into a rotating sub-dial integrated into the
watch itself.

Not simply a design inspired by history, but a mechanical interpretation of the very science that helped shape modern diving.

Intelligent Swiss Engineering.

We are proud to announce that the Albert A. Bühlmann Prize, presented for the first time at EUBS50 in Geneva, was awarded to Jean-Pierre Imbert for his outstanding study in the field of barometric medicine.

The Prize was created to honour the scientific legacy of Prof. Albert A. Bühlmann and, above all, to recognize those who continue to advance knowledge, research and safety in diving and hyperbaric medicine today.

The work of Jean-Pierre Imbert was selected by the Albert A. Bühlmann Prize Jury, chaired by Prof. Alessandro Marroni, founder of DAN Europe together with jury members Dr. Bengusu Mirasoglu, President of eubsofficial Thomas Bühlmann, son of Prof. Albert A. Bühlmann, and Guido Benedini, CEO of Bühlmann Watches .

Our warmest congratulations to Jean-Pierre Imbert on this well-deserved recognition.

EUBS50 was a very special experience for all of us at Bühlmann Watches. Beyond the science, lectures and discussions, we felt part of a community united by a common purpose: making diving safer through knowledge, research and education.

We are proud to support that mission and to help carry Albert Bühlmann’s legacy forward into a new generation.

Thank you to EUBS and to everyone who made EUBS50 such a memorable gathering.

We look forward to continuing the journey at EUBS51.

ORANGE, WITH A REASON.

In the 1960s and 1970s, offshore exploration was moving into deeper waters. Divers working on oil and gas installations had to operate for long periods at depths where conventional diving techniques reached their limits.

This created a new challenge: how could humans live and work safely under extreme pressure and return safely to the surface?

Professor Albert A. Bühlmann’s research in Zurich was at the heart of answering that question. His work on breathing gases, saturation diving and decompression helped establish the scientific foundations needed for increasingly deep and prolonged underwater operations.

The Capshell experiments were part of this pioneering era of hyperbaric research. Divers lived and worked under simulated pressure, allowing Bühlmann and his team to study how the human body absorbed and released inert gases and to develop safer decompression procedures.

The Capshell chamber used for these experiments was painted a distinctive orange.

More than half a century later, that colour became the inspiration for the dial of the Bühlmann Decompression 02 First Edition Orange. Not a colour chosen from a palette.
A colour taken from our history.

From the pressure chamber to the wrist.

500 METERS. ZURICH, 1981.

In 1981, a simulated dive to 500 meters was conducted in the pressure chamber of the University Hospital of Zurich as part of the pioneering work that pushed the understanding of human physiology, decompression and extreme depth further than ever before.

The original dive records shown here document that remarkable experiment: depth, gas mixtures, decompression stages and the names of the men who took part.

More than four decades later, that same spirit of Swiss research and uncompromising dive safety lives on in the Bühlmann Decompression 02.

WHY DOES PRESSURE STILL MATTER AFTER YOU LEAVE THE WATER?

The dive may be over.

The decompression process isn't necessarily.

After surfacing, the body can continue eliminating inert gas accumulated during the dive. This is why what happens next matters too.

And it explains one particularly important rule for divers:

Don't fly too soon after diving.

An aircraft cabin is pressurised — but generally to a pressure lower than at sea level. Flying therefore exposes the body to another reduction in ambient pressure while residual inert gas may still be present.

You left the ocean.

But you haven't necessarily left decompression behind.

WHY IS COMING UP MORE COMPLICATED THAN GOING DOWN?

Going down is relatively simple: pressure increases.

Coming back up is where things become complicated.

During a dive, increased pressure causes inert gases, principally nitrogen, to dissolve into the body's tissues. The deeper and longer the dive, the more gas can be absorbed.

During ascent, pressure decreases and that gas needs to leave the tissues again. If the change happens too quickly, bubbles can form in the body.

That is why decompression science is fundamentally about the journey back.

Going deep is one challenge.
Coming back safely is the science.

I would like to share my short intro speech on occasion of the screening of the Swiss première of the documentary "The Quest for the Perfect Algorithm" at TSK in Bern.

"Good evening everyone,

First of all, thank you all for being here tonight. It is wonderful to see so many people who share a passion for diving, watches, and the stories behind them.

A special thank you to TSK and the entire team for hosting this evening and for their support of independent watchmaking and the diving community.

I would also like to thank Thomas Bühlmann for joining us tonight. Thomas not only carries the family name, but also the responsibility and passion of preserving and sharing the extraordinary legacy of his father, Professor Albert A. Bühlmann.

When we started Bühlmann Watches, we quickly realized that we were not simply creating another dive watch. Behind the name was a story that deserved to be told.

Professor Bühlmann's work changed diving forever. Millions of divers around the world, often without knowing it, rely on principles that originated from his research. Yet outside the diving world, very few people know the man behind the algorithms.

That is why we made this documentary.

Not to look back with nostalgia, but to preserve a remarkable Swiss scientific legacy and to share the values behind it: curiosity, precision, humility, and the relentless pursuit of truth.

And the watch itself follows the same philosophy.

We did not create it to compete with dive computers. We created it as a tribute to this legacy and as a mechanical expression of decompression science, something that allows enthusiasts and divers alike to carry a piece of that history on their wrist.

Tonight is therefore not really about a watch.

It is about a man, a family, a scientific achievement, and a passion that continues to inspire us.

Thank you again for joining us, and I hope you enjoy the film".
